We are driving around Spain, France and Italy in Aug/Sept. Pick the car up in Paris in August and drop in Nice end of September. I know thats lots of driving but we like that!. Coming from the Southern Hemisphere we try to cram in as much as possible. We will be dodging lots of big cities but we would like to go to both Barcelona and Florence on our travels. Where do you suggest we stay on the outskirts of both cities? Were thinking of travelling by bus or local train to look at the sights of both instead of driving in. We are not keen on driving in big cities so would prefer to stay in the outer suburbs or towns nearby. All help appreciated. Thanks
Lucca is a wonderful town to base yourself in and take day trips (by train or car) into the hill towns or to Florence. I think it is only 1 hr by train to Florence. Siena is another wonderful town to base out of, as well. Many neat hill towns around to e xplore. I have great hotels recommendations in both places, if you would like them. I prefer small towns to big towns myself. I also took a wonderful 1/2 day cooking class in Lucca back in April. Wonderful!!!!!
I did the whole trip by train...didn't rent a car. Worked great!
