After Rick's 10 day tour (Venice-Florence-Rome) we are taking a train from Rome to Naples and then to Sorrento for 3 nights. We bought the Circumvesuviana pass and want to see, Pompeii & Herculaneum, Naples, Capri, and possibly a trip around to the Amalfi cost as far as Positano, in that order of priority. What can we resaonably do or not do in this time period ? We are not "spring chickens."
Do you only have 2 full days? Day 2 + Day 3? I assume Day 1 is when you arrive from Rome and Day 4 is your departure day. Day 1 - At what time do you arrive in Sorrento? If it's early/mid- afternoon, you can hop the ferry to Capri and have dinner there, if there is a ferry back (summer schedule). If Capri cannot be fit into day 1, see day 3. Day 2 - Combine Pompeii (morning) with the Archeological Museum in Naples (skip Herculaneum if you spend several hours in Pompeii). You can have lunch right in the Pompeii site. Just be aware of the day that the Museum is closed (Tues?). The ho/ho bus in Naples is interesting and you may have time to do a loop after the Museum. From the port (in front of the castle & ho/ho end stop), you can ferry back to Sorrento. IMO, combining the museum with the Pompeii site results in a far richer experience, than including Herculaneum rather than the museum. Day 3 - You will have to time this one very carefully, which is why Capri should be done on Day 1:
Technically, you can ferry from Sorrento to Capri in the morning, then either through direct or connecting ferry, head to Positano/Amalfi in the early afternoon. Bus back to Sorrento. The best scenario for day 3 is to ferry from Sorrento to Positano, and bus back to Sorrento. If I remember correctly, the ferry from Sorrento goes all the way to Ravello... The Blue Grotto is easily skipped IMO, but a boat tour is worthwhile. Sorrento is lovely for evening strolls. IMO, I'm not sure that the Circumvesuviana pass would be all that useful to you.
"Day 1"- We end Steve's tour IN Rome in early PM (?)then have to take the train to Naples, and then to check in at hotel outside of Sorrento (Hotel Prestige - any good ?). SO we have the time after checking in. Day2 - open Day 3-open
Day 4 early AM, Back to Naples, for train to FCO to fly home.
Please change "Steve's" tour wording to "Rick Steves' " tour. Sorry Rick.
We are headed to Sorrento at the end of May for two and a half days. Day 1: Leave Rome 9:00am. Arrive Sorrento 12:30pm (taking cheap train). Hire driver to take us along Amalfi Drive(picking us up at train station). Back to hotel by 7:30pm. Day 2: All day in Capri. Leave 8:30am and back 6:00pm. Day 3: Train to Pompeii, tour ruins, take bus to Vesuvius. Hike to top. Bus back to Pompeii. Back to Sorrento. That is our itinerary. Mike
