itinerary order Florence/Lucca/CT/Siena

Leaving from Florence, any thoughts on the best way to "attack" Lucca (2 nights) CT (3 nights) and Siena (3 nights) ending up in Rome. This seems to be the most logical order, but I've also thought about Florence-Siena-Lucca-CT (with train from La Spezia to Rome)

Day trips tentative to Pisa from Lucca and San Gimi from Siena. We will not have a car, and are planning train travel for all legs, other than bus between Florence and Siena and bus between Siena and Rome (if that's the way the itinerary ends up)

You might consider doing Siena as a day trip from Florence, resulting in one less move. Or staying in Siena and seeing Florence from there. Another great alternative to these two towns is Pistoia. Perched on the main East/West train line, it is a wonderful, untouristy city of 100,000.We use it as our main "home town " with fantastic results.

It looks like you've studied a map--it's surprising how many travelers try to do an itinerary without studying things like travel times between their destinations. And because you've already done your research, you've already come up with a sensible and enjoyable itinerary.I'm sure you've already noticed the CT's location, perched up in the upper left (northwest) corner of the area you want to cover. Once at the CT, some backtracking is unavoidable to get back to Rome and your proposed itinerary is as good a way as any.Hopefully you've already found the best Europe rail planning website, if not, here it is: get train schedules here

Your travel plan is just fine. From Siena, there is a local bus to and from nearby San Gimignano. From Siena to Rome, you can go by bus to the Rome Tiburtina train station or buy bus to the Chiusi train station and then by train to Rome Termini. You're planning looks good.
