Itinerary input/review please

My hubby and I are going to celebrate our 10th anniversary next April in Italy. Here’s what I’m thinking. Please tell me if you think this is a good idea or any other input. Thanks in advance.

Day 1 - Arrive in Rome and train to Sorrento which will be our base.
Day 2 - Rest & explore Sorrento
Day 3 - visit Pompeii
Day 4 - Chill out
Day 5 - visit Naples
Day 6 - Move to Amalfi to stay
Day 7 - Explore Amalfi & Ravello
Day 8 - Explore Positano
Day 9 - Move to Capri to stay
Day 10 - Explore Capri
Day 11 - Train to Rome to depart the next day

Any accommodation recommendations are welcome. We don’t mind a splurge in Capri and Amalfi.
Thanks
Sharon

Happy Anniversary - a bit early. I like that your trip is focused on one area. That will give you the time you will want to soak in the local culture. I've done your Day 1 itinerary - it isn't bad at all because the train to Naples is fast and comfortable. The train to Sorrento isn't as nice but some of the scenery is worthwhile. My one question is: why move to Amalfi? From Sorrento it is very easy to get to Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. You could actually do all 3 in one day. But because it's so easy to get there - go twice and do it differently each time. I love taking the boat from Sorrento to Positano then to Amalfi then the bus to Ravello. The views from the water are amazing. On the way back, get on the bus in Amalfi. Sit on the driver's side for the best views of the cliffs. On a second trip, take the bus to Amalfi and the boat back. I'm not a big fan of Capri so I'll leave it to others to comment/suggest. In Sorrento, I highly recommend Hotel il Nido (ilnido.it). It is above the city but they do have an hourly shuttle to the center. Check their website to make sure it is running during your dates. IMHO, il Nido has the best view, the best staff and the best restaurant in Sorrento. Breakfast alone would get me to stay there! But dinner at sunset on the balcony is one of my favorite experiences in Sorrento! Happy planning. I'm sure you'll get lots of great ideas on this forum.

Thanks for the reply. The only reason we are moving to Amalfi is to just get a change of scenery. I’ll check out the hotel for sure. Sounds wonderful!!!

Il Nido is booked and I’m so bummed. It’s perfect!!! I’ll email just to be sure. Do you have another place to suggest?

I would consider moving one of the free Sorrento days to Capri, but otherwise I think it looks great. I am one for changing locations {in this area}--it takes a long time to get anywhere, so having overnights in different places is appealing to me. You just don't get to enjoy these places in the same way if you only do day trips.

Happy Anniversary!
We celebrated our 40th with a similar trip in 2019.
We did Sorrento 4, Amalfi/Ravello 3 then on to Salerno 2.

In Sorrento we stayed at Hotel Grand de la Ville- a splurge for us but so worth it. Beautiful rooms, fantastic views and the best breakfast ever, easy walk to town and train station. We are returning this Sept and will stay at Antiche Mura- a slight splurge but not near as much as Grand de la Ville!

We like a change of scenery as well so moving to Amalfi is good. We enjoyed our evenings there just sitting in piazza admiring the facade of cathedral. We stayed at Hotel Bussola- right at water level, we had a small sea view balcony. It was close to ferry/bus, etc. I'd stay there again.

I would split a day between Amalfi and Positano and give Ravello a full day. That will allow you enough time to see the town and walk out to Villa Cimbrone for the amazing views without feeling rushed.
For us Positano was good for a few hours visit. Take the bus to Positano then take the ferry home.

Lastly- if you haven't been to Rome before I would absolutely add a few days at start or end and spend those in Rome.

If you have not already done so, I would email Il Nido to ask about your dates.

It may be that the reservation system is not yet set to do April 2022 bookings.

s.k.vega - definitely email il Nido. [email protected] The form online is different than the inperson reservations. I don't mean anything negative about that! During the past 15 months I've stayed in contact with Gianni and his brother Dino by email. If their calendar is not yet open for 2022, Gianni will tell you and help you out. Business in Sorrento has not been good this past year - indeed that's an understatement. The same is true throughout Italy. To be totally honest, in my 16 annual visits (I'm an opera singer and enjoyed an annual contract in Assisi), il Nido is the one place I will go out of my way to stay at, to reommend, to 'sing' their praises. That said, your thought about changing scenery by staying in Amalfi, is a good one. Amalfi town is an old pirate hangout and still looks it. The cathedral and its museum are well worthwhile. The walkway above the town is spectacular. Great food. Very interesting shops. I never tire of spending a day there. Maybe next year I'll stay a couple of nights too. Thanks for the idea!

What joe32 said. It is very common for hotels in Europe not to have their reservation system set up for requests so far in advance. You might try calling, or just wait a couple of months.
Go with your plan re Capri. Many people say they don’t like Capri, but we did a day trip from Sorrento, and wished we had stayed over night. Anacapri, especially, is beautiful and has much of interest. A downside of a day trip is that you are hedged in by the ferry schedule. They don’t run very late, maybe ‘til 5 p.m. You have to allow yourself enough time get back down to the marina and find the correct pier.
We found Positano very uninteresting, mostly shops catering to well-heeled tourists. Half a day was enough. You can always go back to Amalfi. What ever you do, don’t succumb to visiting the Emerald Grotto, as we did to our chagrin. It is the worst tourist trap I have ever encountered!

On Capri I highly recommend family owned La Minerva. Views of the water, superb service and attentive help from the owners. Three nights here would be much better than two!
