Itinerary ideas from Milan to Venice

Flying this summer to Milan and want go to the lake region (thinking stessa) and have about a weeks time to end up in Venice to catch a cruise.
Any suggestions about where to go along the way to Venice? I'm thinking places that are reachable via train. Not sure if one way car rental would be really expensive. (an option). Any ideas will be appreciated!

Varenna on Lake Como is beautiful and it's an easy 1 hr train ride from Milan. From there you can take the ferry anywhere on the lake like Bellagio and more. I spent 3 days there and loved it.

I learned about Lake Garda on here from another poster Roberto. He had some great information that is in my email and home not at work. I'm having trouble with the search bar to find the post to reference. It's on the main train line from Milan to Venice by using the town and station Desenzano. You can visit Sirmione, Riva and more. I'm going to visit this lake either in 2014 or 2015 for the first time.

If you want to do more than the lakes.
I could recommend: Verona, Padua, Bologna - all great towns to visit.
I used trains to get to all these places.

Spend a couple of nights in Milan before heading to the lake region for 2-3 nights (I'll second the Varenna suggestion). Then a few nights in Venice and you're on your way!
