Itinerary ideas. Flying in and out of Rome

Looking for thoughts on possible itineraries. We fly in and out of Rome with 14 nights to plan in October. We had originally planned to go to Sicily, but have decided we do not have enough time to do it justice, and also don't want to commit to extra plane flights at this time.

Little about our past travels, we have been to Italy once, 15. years ago with our kids. We were lucky enough to have almost a month and feel we saw most of the highlights (Venice, CT, Florence, Rome, Sorrento) as well as several smaller areas ( Lucca, Arezzo area, Verona). We would like to enjoy being there, see smaller sites, have some great meals that we couldn't afford to feed the kids etc. I'm trying not to go back to most places we saw, but we were getting tired when we did Rome last time, so would like some time there. We prefer to take the train or bus, as my husband drives a lot, but are not adverse to picking up a rental car for a shorter period of time.

My tentative itinerary is the following. I feel it needs tweaking.

Rome 3 nights
Orvieto 2 nights
Siena 2 nights
Bologna 3 nights
Venice, or the other extreme ,Naples for 2 -3 nights
Back to Rome for 1-2 nights

I think these can all be done with public transport, with one long train day but near the end of the trip so ready to rest. We did ponder going south as it might be warmer, but I haven't really thought of an itinerary for that

We’ve got a similar itinerary planned for this late September/most of October. Rome, Tuscany, Bologna. We were in Italy last year at about the same time, and included Orvieto. There’s a fast train between Rome Termini station and Bologna. Might you want to go from Rome to Bologna (or Venice), then pick your way back towards Rome, a few days at a time?

If you haven’t been to Pompeii or Herculaneum, or Naples, and ancient ruins are of interest, heading south would be very worthwhile. We stayed in Sorrento (I know, you might not care for returning there), and visited those places, plus Capri, from Sorrento.

Why backtrack- fly open jaw, for example, into Milan or Venice [go to Lake Come] and out of Rome- or the reverse.
Safe travels !

If you are committed to flying in/out FCO, I would go to Orvieto on arrival day and put all your Rome days at the end and save yourself the hassle ( and wasted time) of a hotel change.

If flights are not yet set, look at arrival in Venice and work your way south to Rome for eventual departure home

Thanks everyone, unfortunately flights are set, and with the airline we are with, Rome was only option. Had a companion fare to use up!

I like the idea of Bologna/Venice and picking way back. Our flight home is not until 2 pm. Do you think it would be too risky to end in Orvieto if we are sticking to trains?

Outside my comfort zone; but combined rail time seems to be just a bit over 2 hrs. so its not an 'unthinkable' situation. Just hope that is not the morning the rail workers pick for 3 hour strike.

On arrival FCO head directly to Venice.

Itinerary …

Venice> Bologna>Siena>Orvieto>Roma.
