Itinerary help Venice, Dolomites, (other:maybe Verona & Florence)

I’m looking for feedback on a trip for me and my husband to Venice-Dolomites-4-5 days (Verona/Florence?).

I’m attending a group yoga retreat in the Dolomites October 6-12. My husband is tagging along, and will join some of the non-yoga excursions. We plan to rent a car for at least some portion of the time so that he/we have the option to take day trips. He’s a driving enthusiast with experience driving in Europe. He’s having some foot pain issues, so long hikes or walking tours are probably not on the menu.

We plan to take 3-4 days in Venice before the retreat. I’m still in research mode, so will probably ask for more specific feedback on neighborhoods and restaurants later; right now I’m hoping for wisdom on the larger itinerary. (Though if anyone wants to chime in now, please do!) We tend to shy away from crowded tourist locations, and enjoy just being IN a place.

We want to take 4-5 days after the retreat for something different and fly back to SFO from whatever airport makes the most sense. Ideally driving, as we really enjoy getting to know a place through scenic drives. Is it possible to do Verona and Florence? I understand that Verona has a ZTL, so if we were driving we’d need to get to the hotel during specific hours, correct?
-Is it worth driving from Badia to Verona?
-Is it worth driving from Verona to Florence, or should we take the train?
-Should we choose only one of these cities, and spend a few nights in smaller towns along the way?

possible itinerary:
10/1-10/2: SFO-Venice
10/2-10/5: Venice 3 days
10/6-10/12: Corvara in Badia 7 days
-possible driving day trips
10/12 drive to Verona
10/13 Verona
10/14 drive/train to Florence
10/15 Florence
10/16 XXX-SFO

Thanks for any input!

Recommendation for Venice , because I may miss your next post-
We love staying in the Cannaregio area, on the quiet back canals, where one can take sunset pix without anyone spoiling the frame. We like Hotel Ai Mori d'Oriente for the charm, service, and location. And- just a ten minute walk to a vaporetto stop on the Grand Canal. Book directly for the best price, but research and read reviews on booking.com. Have a great trip!

We've done the drive from Verona-Badia and then heading farther east (Slovenia) and the roads are excellent and fun. Corvara is lovely. If you want something scenic but not much hiking remember that there are ski lifts everywhere and one can go up and down and have a coffee on top in many places. You also might consider doing a driving trip along the WW I front lines between Austria-Hungary and Italy that runs across this area.

Check the weather frequently leading up to the trip since you are talking October and the mountains...

If it were me, I'd end the driving in Verona and just take the train to Florence because you will have worse(?) problems with a car in Florence than you will in Verona.

Have fun!

hey hey frangela
totally agree with muiccia, traveling too much and tourist places, especially florence and venice, maybe even verona.
she/he offers great options of other smaller towns near verona, even lake garda. leave florence for another time and see flights from milan or bologna. count night not days, moving from city takes time (get up shower/pack/breakfast/check out/get to train and to next city may take half a day or more.
october is a very busy month with harvest festivals, many think traveling after school starts HA HA. italy is busy all year long with many wanting to go to smaller towns instead of the crowded cities and take trains (city center to city center), stressing to find parking/cost & how far away, pushing/pulling along cobblestones/uneven pavement.
remember check in to hotels/apts are 3-4pm and check out 10-11am unless you get early approval first, and store luggage before check in/check out.
don't forget you will need an IDP (AAA.com/IDP) to rent and drive a car in italy. good luck and enjoy
