Itinerary Help - Rome / Tuscany / Amalfi

Hello!

My fiance and I are planning a trip to Italy in early September and would love some advice on our itinerary. We currently plan to leave on a Friday and fly overnight into Rome, take a day trip to Tuscany for wine tasting from Rome, travel down to Amalfi where we will take engagement photos, and end the trip relaxing in Capri then flying out of Naples 2 weeks later also on a Friday. Without the travel days we have 13 days to see things and were thinking of spending more time in Tuscany. We are only limited with the engagement photos which need to be on a weekday and preferable early in the trip so I don't have time to get sunburned on the beach first.

What is the best order to see these places, I know Tuscany is out of the way if we are flying to Rome and out of Naples. What is the best way to travel between them?

Thank you for any advice and itinerary suggestions!
Megan

Congratulations on the engagement! Your itinerary looks a bit too busy for my taste. Tuscany is north of Rome and is certainly worth spending plenty of time in that region. Florence is a good home base. It's about 1 1/2 hours north of Rome on the high speed train. From their day trips to Siena, Lucca, Verona, Padova, Cinque Terre are pretty easy. Train service is wonderful in Italy . . . most of the time. Naples is about 1 1/2 hour by high speed train and then Sorrento is another nearly 2 hours by very slow train. By Amalfi do you mean the town or the coast? Take a look at the RS material on the towns to consider: Sorrento, Positano, Ravenna or, Amalfi Town. My favorite is Sorrento. You can easily do one day trip to see the others. And you're a short boat ride to Capri. Hope you aren't looking for sandy beaches. That's not what the area is noted for but the water is spectacular. The gardens and the sunsets I think will make your engagement photos very special.

Have a wonderful time!

Wow! Guess RS really liked my reply? Sorry to take up so much space but it seems the connection from my end did everything in triplicate yesterday. :)

If you choose to do Tuscany, give yourself more time there. 2-3 days at least, it's stunning. Tuscany also refers to quite a large area, so it would depend if you wanted a "city" like Florence, easy to access by train from Rome or if you wanted to be in the Tuscan countryside which would favor a rental car for sure.

First, figure out how much time you wish to spend in Rome, then figure out how much time you would like to spend in Naples and the Amalfi coast. That will help shape your in-the-middle Tuscany section, as you will know how much time you have to work with. You will also need to determine if you wish to stay in Florence or do the rural thing with a car. congrats!
