Itinerary Help - Rome to Florence/Cinque Terre then to Venice

Hello!
My wife and I are very excited to visit Italy in (hot!) late-August/early-September this year and we’re trying to figure out our itinerary. Like most, I know we’re trying to pack a lot of things/places in during our trip, and want to optimize our time. However, we also want some relaxation, and we know we want to visit Cinque Terre for a few days (2 or 3), so we aren’t spending time only in the ‘major towns.’ We’ll be arriving in Rome and leaving from Venice, with the middle of our trip being Cinque Terre and Florence/Tuscany. The tough part is planning travel within Italy to maximize the time. We like the thought of doing Rome, then Florence, then Cinque Terre (because we’ll be busy in Rome and Florence, then more relaxing in Cinque Terre), then Venice, but we’d somewhat be ‘backtracking’ when traveling from Cinque Terre to Venice (and it’s a longish train ride). Or, do we go from Rome to Cinque Terre, then to Florence and then to Venice? Do we save more time by one way or the other? Is one more logical than the other? We’ll be traveling by train between the stops.

We arrive in Rome at 10am, have the rest of that day, then have 11 full days (12 total nights), not including travel to/from Italy. We know our first two nights (Rome) and our last two nights (Venice), but would appreciate thoughts/opinions based on the above and how to figure out the middle two locations.

Day 1 – Arrive in Rome at 10:10am
Day 2 – Rome
Day 3 – TBD, either full day in Rome, or half/most of the day in Rome, then travel to Cinque Terre or Florence in afternoon or night
Day 4 – TBD, if we don’t travel the day before, we’ll definitely be going to either Cinque Terre or Florence
Day 5 – TBD
Day 6 – TBD
Day 7 – TBD
Day 8 – TBD
Day 9 – TBD
Day 10 – TBD
Day 11 – Travel to Venice (from either Cinque Terre or Florence)
Day 12 – Venice
Day 13 – Depart early

Thank you very much!

Kris

Day 1 – Arrive 10:10am in Rome - 3 nights
Day 2 – Rome
Day 3 – Rome
Day 4 – Train to Cinque Terre - 3 nights
Day 5 – Cinque Terre
Day 6 – Cinque Terre
Day 7 – Train(s) to Florence (via Pisa) - 3 nights
Day 8 – Florence
Day 9 – Florence - day trip to Siena
Day 10 – Late train to Venice - 3 nights
Day 11 – Venice
Day 12 – Venice
Day 13 – Depart early from Venice

If you are keen on visiting a lot of churches in Rome, then perhaps a night more here at the expense of CT.

Kris,

I agree with the order listed in the previous reply, as it's the most efficient and will minimize travel times. On the trip from Rome to the Cinque Terre, use one of the direct trains (no changes) as that will be quicker. Which of the five towns are you planning to stay in?

Have you travelled by train in Italy before? If you need further information on that such as which stations you'll be using in each case, post another note.

David has given you an excellent itinerary. The travel order makes sense and the amount of time per location, given you only have 12 nights, is appropriate.

Thank you, everyone!

@Ken....no, we haven't traveled by train in Italy but have been reading up on it a lot and looking into schedules. I didn't know there was a direct train from Rome to Cinque Terre? It's my understanding that we'd go into La Spezia and then take the smaller, regional train from there to the town we're staying in, right? Are you saying there is a direct train from Termini in Rome to La Spezia? Also, we're leaning toward Vernazza or Monterosso, but haven't decided yet.

David, we definitely want to do a day trip to Siena and/or a drive one day throughout Tuscany. Thanks for validating that, but then our time seems more limited in Florence.

What if we travel from Florence to Venice in the morning on our second to last day, leaving us 1 full day and 1 half day in Venice. Is that not enough time for Venice?

IMHO you don't have enough time for the major stops. Rome and Florence should have 4 nights minimum which would leave you with 3 full days each. That is very short for such sight dense places, but at least a start. Certainly no fewer than 3 days in these spots. The Cinque Terre is a good 2 night stop -- with one full day to hike whatever trails are open and Venice in a pinch can be a two night stop if you just want a quick wander in that amazing place.

I think you should pick 3 places and then spend enough time to actually see what they have to offer. But if you want 4 maybe:
Rome 4 nights
Florence 4 nights
Cinque Terre 2 nights
Venice 3 nights

Agree with Janettravels44 -- it appears to be much in too little time -- but that's just my opinion. You want to have good memories of the places you went and the people you met and the things you did -- not just a mental blur of lots of places you barely got to know. The only change I'd suggest to her itinerary is take a day from Florence and add it to Venice.

Best train to La Spezia for you...
IC 510
Dep 09:57 ROMA TERMINI (Italy)
Arr 13:55 LA SPEZIA CENTRALE (Italy)

I think a train from Florence to Venice leaving around 6pm. It's approx a 2 hour journey, so arriving in time for a late dinner. That gives you 2 full days in Venice and virtually 2 in Florence as well.
