We will be returning to Italy for about two weeks next March. The firs 4 days will be in Rome since I am running the Rome Marathon. After that...we would like to go to Florence (again), first time to Orvieto, Volterra and possibly Pisa. What would be the best way to coordinate this portion of the trip? When to drive, use train/bus etc? On the tail end we will spend time in Vasanello with family and then depart from Rome. Thanks for any suggestions! Linda
Rome: no. of nights tbd. No car needed train to Florence Florence: number of nights tbd. No car needed.
Pisa: 1/2 day trip from Florence by train (1hr each way) Siena: day trip from Florence by bus (75 min each way) At the end of Florence stay rent a car and leave Florence. Visit smaller towns in Tuscany by car (e.g. San Gimignano, Volterra etc.). find accommodations in small town or countryside in Tuscany. Don't stay in Florence with a car. At end of Tuscan towns visiting, Leave in the morn and Drive south from your Tuscany location toward Vasanello. along the way stop in Orvieto for partial day visit. Arrive by evening to Vasanello. Keep car in Vasanello also. You will need it there. It's rural. Spend the nights you need with your family in vasanello. Day of departure then drive early morn to airport to catch flight. Return car at Rome airport. If flight is too early, you may want to sleep closer to airport. From Vasanello to airport is at least 90 min drive. If doing so, you could return the car the night before flight. It's up to you. Depends on where you stay near Rome airport. There is a Hotel inside airport, if you want.
Thanks. I didn't think of renting in one location and returning in another!
Good luck in the marathon. That is on my bucket list. Should be a good 26 mile overview of Rome. Have fun!!
