Itinerary help: number of days in Padua, Verona, Milan

June 28- July 5 I am planning to visit Padua, Verona, and Milan, returning to US July 6 out of Milan. How many days would you recommend in each? Should I stay in Verona and visit Padua from there? I will be traveling by train.

Hard to advise without knowing what your interests are.
We are visiting Verona and Padova in Sept and giving each 3 nights with no day trips.

Looks like you have 8 nights? Where do you arrive?

Thank you for replying- I hope you have a great trip! I am extending my stay after touring the Alps and Dolomites with a friend, and our last night is in Cavasagra 40 minutes from Padua. I like all things history, music, and art. Trina

Both Verona and Padova CAN be done as a day trip but you’d have to do some research and determine how much time you’ll need for what you want to see.
We prefer to stay in each town and especially enjoy evenings and mornings when there are fewer tourists about.

You’ll need to get your tix for Scrovegni Chapel in advance if you intend to visit
I think that’s open every day

I didn’t check days of week for your visit but Last Supper is closed on Monday if that is on your list (need to get tix in advance)
Monumental Cemetery also closed on Monday

Thank you, yes I will prebook my tix (too soon at the moment). I want to book the rooms now, though, so I am just deciding how many nights in each place. I agree- mornings and evenings are the best. Thank you, Trina

We settled on 3 nights each after lots of deliberation!
Venice is an easy day trip from Padova as well so you might keep that in mind
Others would be Vicenza and Ferrara
From Verona you can visit Lake Garda
I’d give each a minimum of 2 nights then add 1 night for each day trip
Or you can just skip day trips and stay put ;)

I haven’t been to Padua, so I can’t offer any advice, but I have been to Verona twice. Lovely town! Be sure to check out the opera, as there is nothing like seeing opera in a 2000 year old Roman amphitheater! Bring cushions to sit on, the “seats” are very hard. I also love the castle next to the river, which is now an art museum. I’d suggest a stay of about 2 nights.

From Milan you want to take a direct train to Varenna (1h 15m) and explore Lake Como before hopping on a ferry to Bellagio (15-minutes) and have a lunch. Bellagio is also a nice area to walk around. Another good day trip from Milan is Verona by direct train (1h 15m).
To explore Padua (Padova) I would take a direct train from Milan and sleep there (2h 15m) and make Padua my second home base. I would also listen to Christine about buying tickets for the Scrovegni Chapel before leaving home. Furthermore, you’re actually a 30-minute train ride from Venice that would make a couple of nice day trips.
