Itinerary help needed: Lake Como

Hello,
I am going from Milan to Lake Como and staying one night in Como and then off to Parma the next day. I noticed the hydrofoil ferry from Como to Bellagio/Varenna is only at 7:33, 8:40, and 12:15. Reading past post, it appears we must be at the ferry ticket office super early in the morning. We would love to see Bellagio and Varenna. What would you suggest we do so we can see both cities? Would you suggest we take the slow ferry so we have more flexibility? Or, take the train to Varenna, then ferry to Bellagio and then ferry to Como? I am concerned what we do with our small luggage. Don’t want to carry them the entire day. Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.

I love Varenna as a place to settle, but it makes less sense as a quick shot visit. There is regular, frequent ferry service between Bellagio and Varenna. The area really benefits from a bit of chill time that your schedule doesn’t allow.

Can’t you just leave your luggage at your Como hotel, or barring that, at the train station or a luggage storage place?

If you want to see Varenna and Bellagio it is best to stay in one or the other. Were you unable to find lodging in Varenna? Taking the train and/or ferry for a daytrip will be time-consuming, and inconvenient with the ferry schedules (as you have discovered). Even the train will take one hour 48 minutes to get you there from Como San Giovanni (one change at Monza).
