Itinerary Help for Venice to Rome? Rome to Venice?

We are planning a 14 day trip to Italy in mid-June and are trying to decide if we should work North to South or vice versa. Does anyone have info or flight experience that would favor one way over the other? We plan to stay in Venice, Florence, Cinque Terre and Rome. We are planning 3 nights in each city. This leaves us with one extra night to spend. Which city needs an extra day of these 4? Is it more expensive to fly open jaw? Thanks

Open jaw is about the same price as round trip. Don't forget to count backtracking costs if you choose roundtrip. It is easier to fly into Venice and out of Rome in most cases because of flight schedules and travel time to the airports.

I would spend the extra night in Rome, or Florence, but Rome would be my first choice.

An amendment to Zoe's reply: Usually open jaw flights are indeed about the same cost as round trip, and you save time and money by not backtracking. But recently, flights to Milan can be several hundred dollars less than flights to Venice or Rome. You still have to take into account the time and money it will take to get to where you want to be, but the flight savings can be substantial enough to make it worth considering.

If you're not going to save several hundred dollars with an alternate route, do follow Zoe's advice to fly into Venice and out of Rome. It's much smoother that way, as flights back to the US tend to leave quite early in the day, and getting to Rome's airport for an early morning flight is much easier and cheaper than getting to Venice's airport early. Most people also feel that Venice is an easier place to get over jet lag than Rome.

I'd vote for giving Rome the extra day.
