Itinerary Help for Rome and Amalfi Coast?

Hi! I am planning a last-minute trip with my boyfriend to Rome, Naples, and the Amalfi Coast for August 20-August 27. I know that August isn't the ideal time to go to Italy but it was the only time I could take vacation. Any itinerary suggestions? I arrive in Milan on August 20 (thinking about taking a train or another flight to Rome) and leave out of Rome on August 27. Any suggestions of how long to spend in each place or where to stay would be greatly appreciated. I have been to Rome before a long time ago but my boyfriend has not. Neither of us has been to Naples or the Amalfi Coast. We both like seeing historical places and good food and pretty views.

OK, you have 7 nights, 6 days, not a lot of time for two very rich areas full of sights and sites. Too bad you are landing in Milano as it will take some time to get to the south. I suggest

August 20 - Take a connecting flight to Naples. Normally I would say a train but since you are already at the airport, don't waste time going into Milano to get a train. I suggest Naples so you can get the Amalfi Coast section done first, then end up in Roma since that is where you fly out of. You will have to decide based on when your flight lands if you need to spend a night in Naples or if you can make your way directly to Sorrento, where the Amalfi Coast starts. Do you know why you want to go to Naples? Is there something you need to see? If not, going right to Sorrento will be a better use of time as you can wake up in Sorrento on the 21st and commence your time there and touring the Amalfi Coast. There is a bus from the Naples airport to Sorrento which makes it feasible. Spend 3 nights (Aug 20-21-22) in Sorrento. Try to get a room with a view of the Bay of Naples.

August 21 & 22 - Take an Amalfi Coast tour, go to an island, and/or see Pompeii.

August 23 - Take the train to Rome. Spend 4 nights in Rome, (23-24-25-26).

I second Laurel's suggestion.

For Sorrento, I can suggest --http://ilnido.it/.... we stayed there and would have no hesitation to stay there again. Fabulous views. See the webcam. Breakfast buffet extensive and the patio eating area has the view seen in the webcam, and more.

Laurel has this pretty much nailed. For a last minute trip I wonder if accommodations might dictate where you stay down south. Sorrento is nice, but don't be put off if you end up staying in Naples. For historical places and good food it's really underrated. Pompeii and Herculaneum are superb sites, I consider both as "must-sees" if you're into Roman stuff. The Bay of Naples is its own lovey view, great sunsets. Without much time I would recommend taking a ferry to either Capri or Positano for a day. They are real highlights. Honestly, those Amalfi coast towns can be so packed and touristy that they're almost best appreciated from the ferry as you cruise by. Bottom line, there's a lot to see here, but it will be enough time to whet your appetite for your next visit. Have fun!
