Itinerary help for Italy

Hello,
I am working an itinerary for July 12-27. We want to visit Cinque Terre, Florence (where we would spend at least 5 nights), Venice and Sorrento. What have others done that have visited these same places.? Looking for advice on where to fly in and out of (coming from NYC) and the order of places to visit.

Here is what I am currently thinking: Into Milan and train to Vernazza (3 nights), train to Florence (5 nights), train to Venice (2 nights), fly to Naples and onto Sorrento ( 4 nights) and back to Rome to fly home. Not interested in Rome since we have already been there.
Thanks!

Your itinerary order and modes of transport make sense. All you need to do now is get some kind of guide book to Italy and read up on all the tourist sites to see what you want to visit as those guide books give you more background about the place.
Or you can just Google for example "Vernazza tourism" for example and you will get ideas about what you want to do with your time.

I love that you're bypassing Rome. For us, it was our least favorite area of Italy.
My only thought...you're staying 3 nights in the Cinque Terre and 4 in Sorrento; I believe these areas are very similar. Would you prefer to choose one coastal beach area, and see the mountain lakes towards the north? Or maybe you just love coastal terrain. I do think Sorrento was really amazing. Havent seen the Cinque Terre yet, but just a thought. We really enjoyed Lake Como though. Good luck!

I bought a Rick Steves Italy guide book and a Lonely Planet for Naples and read both on the Naples area (where were're going in April. We are staying in Salerno because we want as easy access to Amalfi, Paestum and Pompeii. Sorrento is only better than Salerno for Pompeii.
So, having chosen Sorrento indicates you've chosen the types of sites you want to see :-)
