Itinerary help!

My boyfriend, mom, 10 year old son and I will be traveling to Italy this fall. Our current thoughts of our itinerary is this:
Fly into Venice, stay 4 nights
Train to Florence, stay 4 nights with a day trip to Ponte Buggianese
Train to Sorrento, stay 4 nights
Train to Rome, stay 4 nights and fly home

My boyfriend thinks we should do one less night in Venice to make another day for Rome as was suggested by his mom. Any thoughts on our itinerary? We have never been and really have no idea.

Thanks in advance!

I think 3 nights in Venice is enough given the family vacation...it is a very romantic and magical city, but on this trip I agree to cut it to 3 nights.

Looks like a great trip!

We've both to both more than once, and I definitely agree with 3 nights in Venice and 5 nights in Rome. In Venice you're spending more time with atmosphere and wandering, but in Rome you have many things to see and do which will take more time. Have fun!

If sticking with public transport, this is the way to go. Out of interest, why Ponte Buggianese? Family?

I've never been to Venice, my wife has no interest whatsoever (she's not as romantic as I am) or Sorrento. I highly recommend staying in Fiesole for your Florence portion of the trip.
