Itinerary Help - An Extra Day in Rome over 5 Nights in Sorrento?

Hello All,

We are traveling for our honeymoon to Italy in Late May - Flying into Rome (arriving at 10 AM on a Thursday) and spending THURS Night, FRI Night and SAT Night in Rome....leaving from Termini on Sunday and headed to Sorrento for 5 nights.

We are not museum people, but definitely want to see most of the main attractions in Rome - and spend time in the atmosphere and electricity that is Rome. We made Sorrento the bulk of our trip because it has more of a "Honeymoon Feel" - scenery, pool, laying out. We will probably do an Amalfi Coast tour while there, but overall most of our time in Sorrento will be spent exploring Sorrento, enjoying the scenery and basking in some sunshine.

That said - Would one recommend shaving a day off of Sorrento and adding another night onto Rome? Are 5 nights in Sorrento too much?

Thanks in advance.

Whether it's too much time in Sorrento depends on what you want to do. I would spend an extra night in Rome, perhaps daytrip to Orvieto if I run out of things to do (I have never run out of things to do in Rome).

In Rome, try to stay in the Centro Storico (especially around Piazza Navona/Pantheon/Campo dei Fiori) or in Trastevere for atmosphere and electricity.

Thank you. We are going to try and stay in Trastevere for a more "Authentic" roman feel.

4 nights should be enough to check out Pompeii, Capri, and drive along the Amalfi coast in addition to spending time in Sorrento. That is how long I stayed last October, and it seemed just about right.

Agree with Zoe -- spend another night in Rome. Marvelous city. TC

I like the idea of adding a day for a side trip from Rome to the hill town of Orvieto, only 1.25 hours each way by direct train. That gives you a very different experience of Italy than your other destinations.

In Sorrento, you may tend to walk up and down the main road quite a bit, unless you make an effort to vary your route. I could also get bored with too much time laying out by the pool, compared to the other attractions of Italy. Of course, you can decide as you go whether to take a boat to Capri or train to Pompei or Herculaneum, etc. on any given day.

I would do Rome last. You need to be in Rome the night before flying back home.
I consider the Amalfi Coast better for honey-mooners, especially Positano.
