Carmen, the fast train from Rome to Venice takes four hours; the fast train Rome to Naples takes less than 90 minutes, so you won't have to spend too much time on trains. Check trenitalia.com for schedules and fares.

I suppose I'd be in the minority, but I'd probably cut out Naples on this trip. It's just in the opposite direction from Venice (and it is 5.5 hours of train travel, including connection time in Rome). A side-trip to Positano - by public transportation is perhaps 2 hours one-way. (A driver can get you there much faster). And back and forth to Capri will take about 2 hours from Naples. So this area demands more time than you can give it... Your first day, arriving in the afternoon, gets you to your hotel (after an overnight flight and connection in Europe (London???) late in the day... so anything you see on this day would be "extra" - especially if you and your 22-month old are tired from travel. So that gives you only 2.25 days in Rome. I might add a day to Rome, and then stop on the way to Venice for an overnight at Orvieto or perhaps Bologna (a very underrated city). That way you spend far less time "on the train" and more time seeing "stuff." This one-directional trip - and a stay in a smaller, less demanding city - will give you more time. I'd save the Amalfi area for your NEXT trip when you can give it more time than 2 days (although I'd not stay in Naples, but rather Positano, Ravello, or Capri!) Just my two cents... Good luck on your trip!

With 8 days and a small child, I suggest you skip Naples and the side trip(s). Four nights each in Venice and Rome would probably be more comfortable.

Oh Guys, I really am tempted to cut Naples, but my husband's very good friend lives 30 min away from Naples and they have planned this trip for quite awhile. They both were deployed in Afghanistan. HE is a local and has been looking forward to seeing us. I should have mentioned this earlier. Im tempted to just do a side trip to Naples but that needs a lot of convincing before my husband can say yes. I dont want to cut Venice too. We are already in Italy, why not make the most out of the trip. We already spent going there!! SO Ill just cut all the side trip in Naples right? Ill see if I can make Naples a side trip since his friend can visit us in Rome anyway. Thanks much again!!
