Itinerary Help - Italy

Hi, all, this itinerary may seem pretty crazy, so I don't necessarily need feedback on the length of our stay in each city (We have certain limitations due to in-laws coming along for the first part of our trip). I would very much appreciate some help for the tail-end of our European adventure.

May 5th: Fly into Rome.
May 6th: Day in Rome.
May 7th: Day in Rome.
May 8th: Day in Rome.
May 9th: Leave Rome, travel to Florence.
May 10th: Day in Florence.
May 11th: Day in Florence (possibly a day trip to Tuscan countryside)
May 12th: Leave Florence, travel to Venice.
May 13th: Day in Venice.
May 14th: Day in Venice.
May 15th: Venice to Hallstatt.
May 16th: Day in Hallstatt, then travel to Salzburg, Austria.
May 17th: Day in Salzburg.
May 18th: Travel from Salzburg to Switzerland, possibly stay in Fussen or Lucerne.
May 19th: Day is up in the air, probably a day in Fussen or Lucerne, or somewhere else in Switzerland.
May 20th: Travel to Lauterbrunnen Valley.
May 21st: Day in Lauterbrunnen/Murren/Wengen area.
May 22nd: Travel from Lauterbrunnen to Zermatt.
May 23rd: Day in Zermatt.
May 24th-29th: Unknown.

We fly out of Rome on May 30th, so need to get back to Rome on the evening of May 29th. We'd really like to spend a couple of days in Cinque Terre to round out our trip. We've considered going to Lake Como or spending some more time in Tuscany in addition to a couple of days in Cinque Terre, so need to decide between the two, or if you have any other suggestions, please have at it!

Please help! Thanks so much. :)

Pretty good plan. You might stop in Milan for a day, then perhaps to CT, Lucca and Pisa then on to Rome.

I am blown away by the hideous amount of traveling to and from Italy and Austria and Switzerland. You will be on the ground for, by my calculations, 23 1/2 days and have a lot of ground to cover. Why the sweep through Austria and Switzerland? If you just spend that time in Italy, you would reduce your breakneck pace of travel and get a chance to enjoy the trip. Right now you have at least 10 places to spend the night, which will be a challenge in the time allotted.

The trip is doable, but possible train trips of 6 to 9 hours aren't my idea of a vacation. For example, if you travel by train from Zermatt to Rome, without stopping at CT or Tuscany, you will gobble up 7 hours, while traveling by car will take a minimum of 9 1/2 hours, unless someone wants to stop to pee.

In the alternative, why not go open jaws into Rome and out of Geneva which would save you the time doubling back to Rome from Switzerland?

Hi, thanks for that insight. I do recognize how “hideous” it is, but it is what it is for reasons that I don’t necessarily need to spell out here, and I wasn’t asking for feedback regarding that aspect of the trip. :)

I've been to CT, Lake Como, and Tuscany. Of the three, I think Tuscany is the most interesting, with varied terrain and many interesting towns, but it really depends what you like. They are all great, but Tuscany is the one I'd like to return to for a week.

Given what I have read about the Lauterbrunnen Valley weather, I'd try to add a day there to maximize your chance of some sun.
