After planning to arrive in Venice and leave from Rome to return to NY, I decided to book a flight into Rome for our family because it was direct and the arrival time worked for us. We’re planning Pompeii, hill towns (suggestions of one or two would be appreciated), Florence and Venice. Should we hit Pompeii/ Amlafi coast first and then head north? Also, suggestion for a town to stay in in the Naples/ Pompeii/ Positano area. Nothing too touristy but still beautiful and walkable. Thanks in advance!
Where are you departing from?
How many NIGHTS do you have?
Sorrento would probably be your best base
When is this trip?
Sorrento and all of AC books up early
Good day,
What a lovely trip you have planned. I’d suggest that you allot multiple days for your trip south from Rome. Pompeii deserves 4+ hours and, along with the 2-3 hour train ride each way, you’ve used up most of a day. Also, there are some nice things to see in Naples too so Naples/Pompeii will be one very full day. It takes a bit longer to get to the Amalfi Coast. I’d suggest getting yourself to Sorrento as early as possible and hiring a car to drive you through the Amalfi Coast. We hired Monetti Taxi (in the guidebook) and they were excellent. I’m sure some more seasoned travelers could tackle all of this in one day but, after so many trips, I’ve found it better to slow down and savor the experience a bit more. Sorrento would be a great base for exploring Naples, Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast. I’d suggest 3 days, 2 night’s minimum. I’m sorry if I rambled too much away from the topic. Good luck.
2 nights is not 3 days-it’s just 1.5
I’d give the area 4 nights minimum which gives you 3.5 days
1/2 day to get there
1 day Pompeii and Naples- this will be a very long day
1 day AC towns
1 day to chill- you’ll need it
Our number of nights is to be determined. I’m assuming our best bet is to leave to go home From Venice. Thank you both. I will take your advice and look into Sorrento!
It will probably make the most sense to leave from Venice but be aware that a lot of flights depart super early from VCE which makes getting to the airport more expensive/more difficult
Not impossible but you will need to plan for that -which is why most advise flying TO Venice and out of Rome
It would have been better to book your flights together as a multi city trip round trip or “open jaw”
Booking 2 one way flights will be a lot more expensive
Suggestion
Arrive Rome
Go south immediately 4 nights
Then back to Rome 4 nights-will take 1/2 day to get there
Then Florence 3 nights
Then Venice 3 nights
Each of the 3 major cities needs a minimum of 3 nights-Rome can certainly use more
Add a night for any day trips to hill towns from Florence
