Husband and I (mid-20s) plan to backpack in Italy mid September. This is our second trip to the country. We like Rick Steve's Italy itinerary but have tried to condense it and make it a little less hectic. Flights are booked, the rest is flexible. What do you think: Fly into Milan & spend rest of day adjusting. First night in Milan. Then: 2 nights Varenna, 3 nights Venice, 3 nights Florence, 4 nights Sorrento (as a base for Pompeii & Amalfi Coast drive), 3 nights Rome. Fly out of Rome.
Looks good. Flying into Milan and out of Rome - Excellent. Listing your itinerary by nights stayed in a location - excellent. Number of nights in these wonderful locations - could be more IMO but very reasonable. You should be able to see the major sites.
Thanks for your help!
I might consider taking one day from Sorrento and adding it to Rome. There's so much to see and do in Rome. Everything else looks great!
Thanks Sharon- you confirmed a suspicion of mine. I followed your advice and switched to 4 nights in Rome and 3 in Sorrento.
To adjust the 1st day, do you want to stay busy or relax? If you want to stay busy, then Milan is the way to go. If you want to relax, consider going to Varenna first and then spending a night in Milan. It's only an additional hour to get from Milan to Varenna and you'll need to return to Milan to go to Venice.
