I am working on the itinerary for my upcoming 6 week solo trip to Italy, arriving in Rome on Tuesday, March 20, and departing Malpensa on Wednesday, April 30, 2013. I would greatly appreciate advice, especially any budget friendly recommendations or strategies for accommodations, excursions and locations of where best to base myself. As I will not have a car, I need ideas for enjoying Italy using public transportation. My preliminary thoughts are that it would be more cost effective/efficient to settle at home bases. Perhaps try to get a studio apartment for one month in a central place with good rail access, e.g. Florence. Then split the other two weeks, one in Rome, and the other heading towards Malpensa, via Venice/Veneto and Varenna. I want to attend Palm Sunday mass at St. Peter's and so thought I would stay the first week in Rome. I also am interested in cooking classes or related excursions (perhaps ones for Modena balsamic vinegar, parmesan cheese, etc.). I saw the RS reference to one in Varenna with Chef Moreno. Finally, I fly out of Malpensa at 12:30pm and am wondering where to stay the night before departure. Should I stay somewhere near the airport with airport drop off? Thanks for you advice!
While you've given us a lot of information on what you're looking for and how much time you have you've said nothing about what you like or dislike. We don't know anything about you so it's impossible for us to make suggestions as to what you should see or what cities you should stay in. A little more information would be helpful in making recommendations. Donna
LaVee, What a wonderful opportunity! If you choose to stay in Florence, I suggest looking into the Hostel Archi Rossi. We found it a good, safe location. If the dorms aren't for you, they have an "annex" with reasonably priced private rooms with ensuite. Have a great time!
