Itinerary Help!

Hello!

We are traveling to Italy in October for our 10 year anniversary. We will fly in and out of Rome. We have 7 days total in Italy (plus two days of travel). So far we plan on arriving in Rome at 9 am and heading to Positano for 3 nights. The last night of the trip we will spend in Rome. So my question is. What to do with our other 3 nights....

  1. Stay on the amalfi coast and head to Ravello or Amalfi
  2. Go to Capri
  3. Spend the two nights on the amalfi coast somewhere and then two nights in Rome
  4. Head to Tuscany.

I love the idea of a tuscan stay but worry we would spend so much time traveling. Is there a place in Southern tuscany? We just want good wine, food and relaxation from our busy lives back home. Im also open to that experience in the amalfi coast.

If you were to stay in the region, then I'd think about Sorrento or Naples, closer to Pompeii, Herculaneum, and the Naples Archeology museum. A separate base on the actual Amalfi coast would be a lot for me, although Europeans probably spend whole weeks or more in summer.

If you went to Tuscany, then you could catch a direct train from Salerno to Florence at 9:14, arrive 12:51, and make a quick onward connection to Siena, for instance.

Why not enjoy Rome? You already have to be there on your last night. There is so much to see and do in Rome. You only have 7 days. Why spend your time on a train traveling? If you must go somewhere else, Orvieto is only about an hour away.

You do not say how you will be traveling between Rome and Positano, or how you are planning to get back, so that affects the next steps. Three extra nights is only two extra days. Spending them in leisure between Positano and Rome (Ravello, Amalfi, Pompei, Herculaneum (Ercolano), Capri, etc. seems much more relaxing to me than 5 hours travel up to Florence, and then half a day back to Rome.

Plan the 11th anniversary for Tuscany - mixing town visits and an agrotourismo stay with wine, good food and truffle hunting.

I would consider dropping Tuscany from a trip of this length.

My original thought was Tuscany would be too much travel. For our two additional nights in the Amalfi where is the best place to stay? We have an Airbnb in positano but can only get it three of the nights. Looking at Capri, Sorrento, Amalfi and Ravello. We are most interested in good food, wine and relaxing while away from our toddlers at home. We like local spots with memorable experiences.

We plan on getting by train to Naples and then a private transfer.

We are doing this for our trip in July with 8 days:
Day 1 - land at 10am
Day 2 - full day in Rome
Day 3 - head to Positano
Day 3 - 7 Stay in Positano with 1 day trip to Capri
Day 8 - head back to Rome - visit Pompeii on our drive back to the train
Day 9 - fly home out of Rome

We originally wanted to do Tuscany too but it is too much for this trip (as advised by these experts here)! I'm glad we picked 2 places and feel happy about our schedule.

If you need to change accommodations anyway- to me Sorrento makes the most sense. You can easily visit Amalfi and Ravello as day trips while you're in Positano. If you then move to Sorrento you can also , very easily, visit Capri and/or Pompeii. Plus it's easy to get to Naples on the Circumvesuviana. Sorrento has some lovely restaurants.

Yes original plan was 5 nights in positano and 2 in Rome but we found cheap flights and our Airbnb is booked the last two nights we need so trying to find an alternative place to go.
