Itinerary Help -- 10 day trip in June

Hi All,

My boyfriend and I are traveling to Italy on June 16th (arriving June 17th) and staying through the 27th. We will be flying into Rome and spending our first 2 days there, then flying to Venice for 3 days, training to Florence for 3 days, and then wrapping up the trip in Rome for our final 2 days. We're working through creating our trip itinerary now, but wanted to get your feedback on what we should and shouldn't include since we're pretty limited on time in each place. We're talking about doing a quick trip to Verona for half a day (take a train early and return by 5:30 or so) for one of the days in Venice, but I'm not sure if we should or if we should just focus on Venice for the extra time.

Any and all advice is welcome! This is my first time in Europe (my boyfriend was born there though), so would love tips on things to research or remember when traveling abroad as well!

Thank you :)

Hard to advice on Verona. It is definitely worth a trip and it is doable in half of a day but then again, less than 3 days in Venice may mean rushing too much.
As for Florence. If it is well planned and maybe supported by Firenze Card, which allows you to avoid lines, you should make a half day trip to nearby Piza. Not too much to do there besides the area with the Leaning Tower, but it is worth going there since it is very well connected with Florence.

Are you locked into your flights? If not, why not either fly open jaw (into Venice, out of Rome), or get a flight directly from Rome to Venice on the 17th. Breaking your time up in Rome into 2 days at the beginning and 2 at the end is inefficient.

It's better to count nights than days. Your arrival day in Rome isn't going to be much of a day, and you shouldn't count your departure day either. And your travel days will be eaten up not just by travel time but by packing, getting to the airport or train station, waiting, and getting from the train station or airport to your next hotel. So you'll really just have 1 day in Rome at the beginning, and not quite 3 days in either Venice or in Florence once you account for travel, and maybe 1 1/2 days in Rome at the end.

As far as a day trip to Verona, what do you want to see there? What do you want to see and do in Venice? Without answering those questions, it's hard to advise you on whether to take time away from Venice to go to Verona.

If you're stuck with the flights you have, that's unfortunate, but make the best of it and enjoy your time.

Do a little research on Verona, look into the trains, and then just play it by ear when you are in Venice. If you are loving Venice then just stay put, and if you are "done" then take the trip to Verona. If your research is done, then it will be really easy to decide when you are in Venice.

Like Lane said, it would be better to fly into Rome or Venice and then out the other so you are not backtracking, but it maybe too late for that.

We love both places, but Venice is very unique! Have a fabulous time!

Agree with Lane. You're already at the airport, fly to Venice and start there.

You'll end up saving time and money.
