Itinerary Gap - Friuli Venezia Giulia, Julian Alps - suggest must-do's?

Hello!

We are filling a three-four day gap in our trip, and appreciate your suggestions for things to see between Ortisei and Trieste (we have a car.)

I am partial to seeing some really high peaks - would it be necessary to drive up into Austria and take the Grossglockner Hochstrasse, or will the Dolomites near Cortina d'Ampezzo provide a similar enough thrill?

Our other ideas are to stop over in Udine for a night, and to visit Aquileia on our way into Trieste. Other must-do's?

I like your second option, particularly Aquilea.

Thanks Zoe - thinking now to do a loop around the eastern Dolomites and down to Udine, Aquileia and then arrive Trieste. Wondering, however, about what there is to see before leaving Cortina. Special fondness for big peaks. Can we see some by driving east to Tolmezzo and then down to Udine? Is Tolmezzo worth visiting? What else.
