This will be our first time to Italy. Does the following itinerary sound good? We will be traveling by train and bus as needed. Venice 3 nights Florence 3 nights Monterosso 3 nights Orvieto 3 nights Rome 4 nights
Any and all help is appreciated.

I would say yes. Good first trip. You'll be planning your return before you leave Florence.

I would chg Monterosso and Orvieto to 2 nights ea. If you wish 2 nights in Siena outside Florence is a great destination and all doable by public bus. see alot of the hilltowns nrby in Siena. enjoy.

Gen, you might get more helpful responses if you share the kinds of things that you're interested in seeing and doing. I too would put do one night fewer at Monterosso and Orvieto, based on my interests.

I agree with cutting a day (or even two) from Orvieto but my recommendation would be to visit Orvieto as a day trip from Rome so that you can minimize another hotel change. The hotel changes are tiring and they waste a lot of time. Orvieto is a great town (a must see) but I can't see spending 3 nights there. I personally loved the CT & am planning to return there on our next trip so I wouldn't cut a day from Monterosso but that's just my 2 cents. If you find that by the third day you've explored the 5 CT towns enough, you can always take a ferry to Portofino, Camogli or Portovenere. I definitely recommend visiting Siena as a day trip from Florence. It's easily accessed via train. Have a great trip.

Thank you for all the input. Would it be better to stay in Siena for two nights versus Orvieto? Then on to Rome and possible day trip to Orvieto. Does this seem like a better use of time?

On the issue of Siena versus Orvieto for two nights: Orvieto is a very quiet hill town. Siena is more bustling, and IMHO, a city. I think two nights is a bare minimum anywhere because I like to get a sense of a place and it takes more than one night to do so. I also think the CT (Monterosso) deserves 3 nights because it is a long way to travel for what amounts to one full day there if you only stay two nights. Not knowing your interests, the orignal plan looks doable and pleasant (not too fast of a pace) but 2 nights in Orvieto is probalby right. I would add that saved night to Rome for a strong finish. Siena or Florence, one but not both. Depends on what you want to do. Florence for art, Siena for daytrips in Tuscany.

Laurel, Thank you for your comments. I like the idea of 2 nights in Orvieto and adding an extra night to Rome.

We took a similar trip last Oct., flew into Venice and out of Rome, except I had more time, 22 days, and included the Lake Como area, Siena and Amalfi. My learned opinion is that you should definitely go to Siena for a day, or even spend a night when it is a magical place. It is an easy bus ride from Florence. I would also skip Orviedo(been there) or do it as a half day trip from Rome. You would now have 3 days to head to Positano, Ravello and the Amalfi coast which is spectacular and I believe not to be missed. We did the whole trip via train and buses, stayed at nice B&Bs and I have some recommendations where to stay and what to do if you contact me. A lot also depends when you are going. Whatever you do it will be an awesome trip.
