Itinerary for 9 nights- eight days.

We are arriving in Rome and going directly on to Florence. Currently planning 4 nights in Florence and five in Rome. We are traveling in August but have reservations at hotels with pools. One thought was to take a night away from Rome and spend a night in Chianti with rented car and return it to Chiusi to catch the train to Rome. I have been told to avoid rental returns in FLorence. Would you recommend this or would you recommend we do a day trip to Chianti instead and leave five nights in Rome? We are traveling with our two teen/young adult daughters. All have traveled extensively but this will be our first visit to Italy.
thank you!

I would do a day trip to Chianti w/ your situation. Def more enjoyable than your other option. Florence is a hassle/nightmare for tourists w/ rental cars, been there and done that.
Another option you could consider is bus it from Florence to Siena for the day for a Tuscan touch.

I agree that a day trip to Chianti from Florence would be your best bet. You will get the most out of your time, and you can relax because you aren't driving ;) There are many tour companies that will pick up in Florence, take you to Chianti, Siena, etc. and drop you back off in Florence at the end of the day. Since there are 4 of you, you may even consider hiring a private guide who can handle all the details for you. Check out Luca at HillsandRoads.com
