Itinerary for 9 Nights/10 day trip

I am trying to fine tune my itinerary and would appreciate your thoughts if I am heading in a good direction. I will be arriving in Milan (from JFK) on Oct 3rd at 12:15 pm. Take the train to Florence. Spend 2N in Florence. Stay in Siena 1N & rent a car. (Or would it be better to spend 3N in Florence, bus/train to Siena for the day & rent a car). Drive to Montalcino spend 3 N. Drive to Castiglione della Pescaia, sleep in Vetulonia 2N. Head back to Siena to drop car & make my way to Milan 1N. The flight leaves Milan at 4:10 pm.

Have been to Milan and Florence but not the others. Have you considered picking up/dropping the car at Malpensa? We stayed in Florence 2 nights and wish it had been three. Also, we've been to Milan twice and enjoyed it.

Bus to Siena early, see Siena then late afternoon pic up car in Siena, drive to,Montalcino etc.

Hi Kevin, I haven't been to Milan or Florence. My husband & I are more interested in the Tuscany area. We got a really great fare into/out of Milan. After doing some research & reading Rick's section on Milan, the only thing that interests me (not to dis Milan) is the Cathedral & the Last Supper. We will be doing all the museums in Florence & that will be about as much as my husband can take, lol.

We are more interested in seeing the countryside. Visiting smaller towns (outside of Florence). I don't really want to have a car while staying in Florence.

If you want the countryside, which we also like, spend me time there. 2 nights in Florence.
Siena worth a night stay just because it is totally different, and better, place, once all the day tourists are gone.
