Itinerary ?? -- Florence

I just about have my itinerary figured out. My trip is late August and September so I have lots of time to change my mind a few times. Trip includes my first visit to Florence.

What I'm wondering: will I regret not going to the Uffizi? I know I've overscheduled Florence and didn't give myself enough down time/shopping time so something has to be cut. I'm not a huge fan of art museums or crowds, preferring
museums that include furniture and clothes, like Palazzo Davazanti. The Uffizi is the only sight I'm questioning in Florence. I'm comfortable with timing for everything else.

Elsewhere, I already cut the Vatican Museums. Been there, done that and hated the crowds. Actually Venice and Rome itineraries are pretty much completed. I'm sure I will be asking more questions as I finalize my itinerary. Thanks for now!

It’s up to you what interests you. The Uffizi is the most important gallery in Florence and one of the most important in the world, but if you are not interested that is your choice. Just know that Philippe Daverio a famous Italian art critic recently deceased, used to say that we should approach museum visiting the same way we approach dining at a great restaurant. When people go to a great restaurant they don’t order all items on the menu, but rather order just a couple or so dishes. The same applies to museums, one shouldn’t enter one with the purpose of visiting for 4 hours and seeing every work of art displayed, but rather concentrate on a few that are most important or that interest you. I now limit my museums visits to focusing only on what I can properly see within one hour or so, then I’m done.

I agree with Roberto. You wouldn't try to see everything in the Louvre or the British Museum in one day. I've been to the Uffizi twice, and still haven't seen it all. I picked a few galleries that interested me most, and skipped the rest. Only spent a couple of hours each time.

But if you aren't interested in art museums, then why would you bother? There are plenty of other things that will probably interest you more. You do you!

How many full days in Florence and what is on your list already?

The day I visited the Uffizi, I was there as soon as it opened in the morning and it got crowded pretty fast. HOWEVER, the crowds were all in front of the famous art, leaving most of the rooms for me to enjoy at my own pace and only see what I was interested in. However, again, I go to Italy mainly to see art and since you do not like art galleries, I'm hoping that what's on your list of things to see in Florence are some of the wonderful art that is still in the place it was painted for or sculpted for, i.e. not in a gallery.

I went to Florence five times before I saw inside the Uffizi.
You will enjoy Palazzo Davanzati, and you also might like the Gucci Museum and the Ferragamo Shoe Museum too since you like clothing.
Both are really interesting, and the Ferragamo one is very well air conditioned on a baking hot day!

Thanks everyone. Uffizzi sounds like an hour or two well spent, so maybe I'll go first thing in the morning, then sit in a cafe and people watch and get in a little souvenir shopping. I'll post my itinerary soon.

I went to Florence in late October 2023 for a five day stay. Pallazzo Davazanti was a highlight of all of the museums. Florence is so packed with museums and sights that even with 5 well planned days it was a bit overwhelming. The Uffizzi is absolutely worth it. The underground museum of the Duomo was very interesting. It will take one full day just to get used to the crowds and general business of Florence.

The Rick Steves Audio Europe app has a nice 60 minute (free) narrated tour of the Uffizi Gallery. Perhaps this may be enough of the highlights for you. I highly recommend visiting!
