Itinerary filler after Florence.

Hi
Travelling in mid October.
I have finished our itinerary after filling in no change dates and find I am I sure what I can do with a free day.

We are staying in Florence for 5 nights.Picking up
A car as we head out of Florence. We have the 6th day and night unplanned. Night 7 we are due in Treviso.

We had originally wanted to see some of Tuscany but I know a night is no time even with a car. Is it worth taking a night off Florence or better to add the spare day on and leave Tuscany for another time.

Thanks for any help.

If I had your 'problem', I know would look at Ravenna as a possibility.

A night with a car headed from Florence to Treviso leaves you with some interesting potential places to stay that are "on the way" depending on what you are looking for. I think smaller towns will be more manageable driving so leaving out Bologna and one night in Venice not worth it.

In the small city category there is Modena, Mantua (a bit more out of the way), and Ferrara. Ravenna is a bit out of the way but a great city for mosaics.
Verona is pretty city and convenient stop but just drop the car at one of the larger lots outside the city core.

October might be getting Lake Garda for ocean or lake and it would add to the drive but if that something that would interest you look into that.

Be sure to read up on ZTLs before driving around Italy.

Have a great trip,

I would not want to drive the fast route that shows up on Google, but you could take the longer drive via the coast and stop in Ravenna. I would rather break up the drive versus staying somewhere close to Florence and then having a long highway drive. But that’s just a personal preference, you likely have many options!

I am guessing leaving Tuscany to another trip is a good idea!

Florence is in Tuscany and there are many easy day trips from Florence to the Tuscany countryside-are you planning to do any?

We dislike 1 nite stays so would probably take a night from Florence and add either Ravenna or Verona for 2 nites (dropping car in Verona and continuing on to Treviso by train)

Hi,

By Tuscany I meant some of the hill towns. We were originally trying to stay in
Siena or Volterra.

OP, add me to the chorus that suggests:

  • subtracting 1 night in Florence
  • spending 2 nights in Verona

Why Verona?

  1. You'll be heading in the general direction of Treviso.
  2. You can conveniently turn in the rental outside Verona, take a bus to the city center and simply walk, and eventually depart by train to Treviso.
  3. It's fabulous for its sites, river views, food and wine, and high-end, yet relaxed, vibe.

While Ravenna's ancient mosaics are unbelievable, Verona offers much more and is a better fit in your itinerary, imho.

Not trying to second guess your plan but I'm assuming you have something specific you need the car for during your trip. If you've eliminated rural Tuscany there is no need for a car between Florence and Treviso even if you stop at any of the suggested places.

Maybe you planning on a Dolomite exploration that is best done with a car after Treviso? If your plans have changed it might make sense to cancel the Florence car and pick up the car in Treviso or the nearby Venice airport for the post Treviso section. You might be able to cut out 3 or more car rental days and save that money and stress by taking the train.

Just my $.02,

Agree, if you don’t need the car in Treviso, and you can easily do your trip by train (does not look appreciably longer or more difficult), then train would make more sense.
