Hi everyone
After much trepidation, we finally did it and booked our airline tickets for our much-anticipated trip to Italy for the end of Sep for 20 days!
The plan was to keep our overnight stays to a minimum and try not to do too much but now I am not so sure, I feel that there are too many days in one place, especially Rome? Should we spend a night in Florence so we have 2 full days? or overnight in Assisi?
This is the very tentative itinerary, Any suggestions are greatly appreciated
DAY . NY to Milan (1.5 days in Milan)
3. Milan to Venice . . take the train to Venice later in the day . 3 full days in Venice
4. free day
5. Burano, torcello
6. free day
7. Venice to San Gimignano (staying at an Agriturismo for 7 days as a base ( we will have a car)
8 several days exploring hillside towns doing wine tours cooking etc
9 Florence
10
11
12 Asissi
13.
14. To Rome (5 days in Rome)
15 sight see around Rome
16
17 Vatican
18 Pompeii or Herculean Opoltis
19 Naples?
20 home from Rome
Many thanks
Usually people make the opposite mistake, not enough time in one place. But you don't have six days in Rome if you go to Pompeii and Naples on two of the days. I am not sure I am reading it correctly.
Make a list of what you want to see in each place, then determine if you have enough time for it all. I think three full days in Venice, a week in Tuscany are both nice. Just keep fleshing it out to see if the rest is what you want.
After Assisi I would go to Naples/Sorrento if you intend to do Pompeii/Herculaneum and finish in Rome to make departure for home simpler.
2 nights = 1 full day and bits of the others. One night does not give you 2 days.
Planning is easier if you list how many nights you spend in a place
yes, I see what you are saying. Thank you
That was my thought as well. Naples for 1-2 nights, then Rome. Can you drop the car in Assisi? If so, I'd drive to Assisi after the agriturismo for 1-2N, then train to Florence, to Naples, and lastly to Rome. It's shorter to drive to Assisi from San Gimignano than to take the train from Florence. From Florence there are fast trains to Naples, there are no fast trains to/from Assisi, which also means it's a very long day trip from Florence.
Staying in Naples is the most convenient to visit Pompeii and see some of the treasures of Naples, including the National Archaeology Museum (it's a Wow). What is Herculean Opoltis? I tried googling it, just got one result that Herculean Opolis refers to the 12 labors of Hercules.
Probably Ercolano and Oplontis.
yes Oplontis
good point about the fast train, I hadn't thought about that
I will definitely consider your suggestions, does make more sense
thank you
