Itinerary Check for Italy October Trip. Any suggestions?

We are both 60 and very active. We hike, and love history, have been to Europe but not Italy. Priorities in Rome include St. Peter's Basilica (not the Dome), Trevi fountain, Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, Pantheon, Spanish Steps. We will be traveling by train where possible.

My dear H booked our flights and mistakenly have us arriving and leaving out of Rome. We were hoping to leave out of Naples but it's okay. Just another adventure.

Thank you for any Positive suggestions. Think I got all this right! HA!!!!

I would go to Pompeii before the Archaeological Museum but that’s just my opinion.

Are you saying go from Rome to Pompeii and then to Naples for the night?

Thanks for the input.

Hello mom2co3,

I think he's suggesting that seeing Pompeii first gives you more context to understand the Pompeii artifacts you're seeing in the museum. Given your schedule you would need to go to Pompeii on you transfer day from Rome to Naples and then do the museum on your full day in town. While I agree with his suggestion if you're not transferring to Rome in the morning you'll might be shorting your Pompeii day by doing this depending on your timing.

My only comment on that in both Rome and Florence I would definitely pre-buy tickets for the various sites you want to visit. I assume this is your plan but you have "audio tour" and "day trip" listed instead of what you have tickets for that day. Usually a one day Florence trip us listed like "Accademia tickets @this time, audio tour walk, lunch, Uffizi tickets @this time" etc.

Same with train tickets. Fast trains between big cities can be bought in advance at significant discounts but you're trading flexibility for price. If you're willing to commit to a schedule then you can save some real money. Fats trains from Rome to Naples are about 1:15 and Rome to Florence is a bit longer.

Have a great trip,

Nice itinerary except for the last part
I wouldn’t want to travel all the way from Capri to Rome-too many transfers

Maybe go to Capri from Naples then to Amalfi-ferry is the only way! ;)

From Amalfi take the ferry to Salerno and catch a direct train to Rome

I’d be fine with Museum before Pompeii-works better for your itinerary
Museum is closed on Tuesday

I think you are short-changing Florence, unless you are really not interested in history.

I'd arrive in Rome, immediately take the train to Florence, spend three nights (still not enough!), then take the fast train to Naples, sleep there a couple of nights, then the Amalfi area, and back to Rome for five nights for sightseeing and to fly home. In fact, we did almost this exact trip in 2023 only we also stayed in Bologna for two nights before Florence.

I always advise to get to your furthest point the day you arrive since it's a day lost to travel and you won't be able to do anything meaningful anyway. Then do your time in your departure city at the end, saving a night on the back end.
Hope this is helpful.

Agree with Celeste that Florence needs way more than a day trip but it seems that Rome and AC are your focus

You could head to Naples on arrival and put all Rome nights at end
Maybe take 1 night from Rome
Go from Salerno all the way to Florence for a night then back to Rome
Depends on which day of week because most museums in Florence are closed on Monday

Naples 2 or 3
Capri 2
Amalfi 3 or 4
Florence 1 or 2
Rome 4 or 5

I agree with all those who suggest that you move all your Rome days to the end!

Yes buying all tickets ahead of time for places require it. The audio tours take you to all of these places and is mostly a walking tour app providing the best routes to see places you prioritize.

Thanks.
