I’ve cancelled our days in Naples due to time limitations. We have 11 nights total. We start with 3 nights in Rome. I want to hit Florence (min 3 nights) , Venice (2-3 nights prior just to flight home from there). I’d like to explore some one or two hilltop towns, specifically Orvieto, perhaps on the way to Florence. I was thinking of San Gimignano day trip from Florence, but would appreciate suggestions. Also, I’m having trouble finding car rental drop off locations, specifically Orvieto.
Also… any aggritourismo suggestions would be fun to look into as well.
What is your question? Maybe where to pick up and drop off a rental car? I think Orvieto only has one location, near the train station.
You don’t want to have a car in Florence; too risky with all the ZTL areas.
I think that Orvieto has only had one rental counter, a Hertz I think. That particular location has fallen out of favour with the consolidators. I've seen negative comments.
But my memory is pre-covid.
You don’t really need a car at all
Take the train from Rome to Orvieto and spend 2 nighrs-it’s worth it
Then train to Florence
You can do a day trip by bus or guided tour to SG from Florence.. but you’ve only got 2.5 days in Florence
A bit easier would be Siena
Then train to Venice
That fills your 11 nights
Orvieto only has Hertz, not offered thru AutoEurope anymore due to bad service
Do you recommend I stay in the town or outside of Orvieto? Outside of Orvieto, places have pools which would be great. However, I believe we’d need a car. Then again, I’m wondering if we would have plenty to do if we stayed in town?
Why do you believe you will need a car? You haven't been to Italy, and you are going from city to city. Your trip is very rushed. You don't mention the time (day/month) of this trip.
Your decision to cancel Naples is very sensible. I'd cancel Venice too. Rome, Orvieto, Siena, Florence. You get the hill towns and the Tuscany experience. San Gimignano is on the way from Siena to Florence. But a trip with 5 stops in 11 nights would be very rushed. Unless you plan on spending a lot of time by the pool, I'd just ignore that. Depends on your interests, of course, but we travel for art, wine, food, and the experience of the location. We spend little time at the hotel.
What you might consider is Rome->Orvieto->Siena->Florence. Siena->Florence is very quick, and Siena is a really interesting town. No car is needed.
Stay in town
There’s plenty to do for 2 nights
Rome 3
Orvieto 2
Florence 3
Venice 3
All by train
No day trips, you barely have enough time in each location as it is
