Katie, I've learned through trial and error to book hotels ahead for at least your first and last destinations. That way you can not worry about finding a room when you are tired crom flying, and can plan your route to the airport for your departure. In Milan, I recommend Hotel Garda, it's near the Stazione Centrale and the Metro, so you can get around easily. I booked a single room for July for €50. I've stayed there before, it's got everything you'll need. Check out booking.com for hotels, you can filter results by price, location, amenities; it shows how many rooms the hotel has and how many are available. It also limits its reviews to guests who have actually stayed there. most recent stays are posted first. You can look at train schedules and prices at trenitalia.com, there are some super-saver tickets available but you are locked into a specific train, time and date. There is also an economy fare with a little more flexibility, and the base fate which is full price and the most flexibility.

Continued You may want to go to Positano one day and Naples the next day; the archeological museum in Naples has lots of pieces from Pompeii. By the way, for Pompeii, be sure to get off the Circumvesuviana train at Pompeii Scavi, the other Pompeii stop is in the modern city. If you take the bus from Sorrento down the Amalfi Coast, be sure to get a seat on the right-hand side of the bus, and take the local bus up to Ravello for great views. For a different perspective, take a boat for the return trip from Amalfi or Positano to Sorrento. In Rome, consider the Roma Pass, which includes free bus and metro transportation. Check outthe roninrome.com website for lots of info.
