I am planning a 11-12 days family trip in March that will cover 1. (flying into) Verona, mainly to see Santuaro Madonna della Corona and perhaps Lake Garda, 2. Tuscany/Florence, 3. Rome (Vatican and the Appian Way only) and 4. L'Aquila (for a concert). We will fly back from Rome. Husband wants to visit Tuscany for the scenery, I want to revisit Florence which I love and daughter is a baroque/art lover. The preliminary plan is Verona 2nts, Florence/Tuscany 4-5 nts, Rome 2 nts and L'Aquila 1-2 nts. Nothing is set in stone for now, and every time I research, something else looks interesting to me!
It's likely that we need to rent a car for the Verona and Tuscany part of the trip, as well as the Rome to L'Aquila return trip. I am seeking advice on 1) the itinerary - how to balance everyone's interests without packing for a different hotel too often, and 2) how best to handle the rental car. Being mindful that it's a bad idea to drive inside Florence and Rome, we do like the flexibility to drive from Florence to Rome so that we can stop in some of the towns along the way, and we need a car to get to L'Aquila and back to Rome airport anyway. Or should we just drop off the car in Florence and rent again when in Rome?
You can get to L'Aquila from Rome in 3 1/2 hours by frequent regional trains. 14.60 EUR pp each way.
