itinerary advice please - Northern Italy in August

My daughter (12), husband and I have a trip planned to Northern Italy in August (the only time we could go) - flying in and out of Milan. We were planning on visiting Switzerland during our trip but have made some last minute itinerary changes due to train line closure out of Stresa. We decided to stay mainly around the lakes due to the weather in August. Our vacation style is leisurely with at most 1 preplanned activity per day. I am trying to decide if this is too much lake time. Considering taking 2 nights away from Como and spending 2 nights in Bergamo instead. Would love anyone's thoughts

Current itinerary:

3 nights Srtesa
4 nights Varenna
4 nights Como

Alternate itinerary:

3 nights Stresa
4 nights varenna
2 nights Como
2 nights Bergamo

Thank you!!!!

Staying in both Como and Varenna seems quite redundant. You could just stay in Varenna and visit other towns on the lake, including Como, by ferry.

Do you need to be in Milan the night before your departure flight? How early is your flight?
Safe travels.

Thank you for your replies. Our itinerary is a bit odd because the original plan was to go up to Wengen, Switzerland from Stresa and then to stay in Como (so 3 nights Stresa, 4 nights Wengen, 4 nights Como) but due to the trainline closure we decided to stay in Varenna instead.

We do not need to be in Milan the night before our flight as the flight leaves in the evening.
Thanks all!

Bergamo is lovely. I've never stayed overnight, just a couple of day trips, so I don't have specific recommendations of what to do in the evenings. There are endless restaurants and pretty streets, so I'm sure you'd keep busy. I think it would be a good choice after 9 nights of lakes. If you go, do try to stay in Bergamo Alta. The lower town is newer and not as pretty.

While you're in Stresa, I recommend checking out the little Lake Mergozzo and its town (same name). It was once part of Lago Maggiore until some geological event dumped enough rock to cut it off. It's a very pretty little town, and you can walk up a (moderate) hill to get a great view of Lake Maggiore.
