Hello!
It really depends on what you’re looking for. On the east coast of Italy, Rimini is popular for its long sandy beaches and lively nightlife, while Ravenna is quieter and known for its stunning Byzantine mosaics. If you want something more off the beaten path, Ancona or the smaller towns along the Marche region (like Senigallia or Pesaro) are great for a more local feel and beautiful seaside views. For history plus beach, I’d personally recommend Ravenna—easy to reach by train and full of charm.
Venice is in eastern IT. Good day trips from Venice are Padua (Padova) by direct train (30m) and Verona (1h 30m).
Athens and Dubrovnik are nice cities to stay in, both of which are East of Italy.
Ravenna is wonderful.
Rimini was OK, but we thought the beach area had a bad odor.
In another post you said you will be driving for a month. If by East you mean the Adriatic Coast in one month you can start from Venice (or even Trieste) and work your way down to Otranto, the Easternmost point of the Italian peninsula, and stop in several places for 3-4 nights each.
Officially Italian regions are grouped into North East, Northwest, Center, South, Islands, although the is a famous Fair of the Levant, an annual major trade exhibition which takes place at the Bari Fiera del Levante Exhibition Center, therefore only Puglia might be referred to as Eastern Italy, by Italians. However also Puglia is grouped with the Southern regions.
With one month you can do the entire coast, stopping for 3-4 nights in each region (more in Puglia, which is very large and long). So look up every individual region on the way down by using the search box above and also Google. The regions are from north down (the main city in parentheses) are:
Friuli-Venezia Giulia (Trieste)
Veneto (Venice)
Romagna (Ravenna, Rimini)
Marche (Ancona)
Abruzzo (Pescara)
Molise (very small portion)
Puglia (Bari)
If you search the above regions in the search box, you can find a lot of suggestions for each).
The base you should choose in each should be based on your interests, which will probably determine the various towns you want to see on day trips.
