Itinerary Advice

My mother and I are planning a trip to Italy mid to late April (arriving on morning of 16th and leaving afternoon of 27th). We are flying in from and out of Rome. This will be my fourth trip and her second; we both went to Italy for the first time around 15 years ago, so it’s been a while for my mother, while I have made it back two other times since while studying in college--meaning I was there for a good amount of time and got to make a lot of leisurely day trips around the Ligurian region and the western Tuscan region (around Lucca). I’m trying to make an itinerary to make sure we have a good balance of quality vs quantity, though my mother and I both favor quality in where all we go and how long we stay.

I am worried that I may be over-ambitious in my planning, especially since a lot of what we're doing is stuff I've done recently but that my mother has not, and wanted to get some input from some experienced Italy travelers on my first rough (emphasis on rough) draft of an itinerary.

Day 1: arrive in Rome, take train to Florence. Probably explore the area and not do anything we need to make reservations for.

Days 2--4: stay in Florence, do scheduled tour stuff. I may knock a day off here depending on how planning goes, and since we have both been to Florence before.

Days 5--7: Tuscany, outside Florence. I’m thinking either Siena or Anghiari, or both?

Day 8--12(AM): Rome/around Rome?.

Day 12(PM): leave

I’m also wondering about driving. Based on what I’ve seen, I only feel secure enough to drive around the Tuscany region; I have no plans on driving into the cities of Rome and Florence. Is it worth getting a rental car if we’re just spending three, maybe four days outside Florence?

The only thing we have set in stone is when we will be in Italy; we have not made any reservations otherwise. I would very much appreciate any advice or recommendations you all may have!

It’s helpful to think of things in nights rather than days. Roughly, two nights only gets you one FULL day somewhere. Based on that, I think something probably needs to get cut somewhere. It sounds like you end up with maybe two days in Rome, which I don’t think is enough either. Getting to Salerno is pretty easy, and if you’ve got two full days there you’d get something out of it. However, I think Amalfi Coast can and should be a trip on its own. Two days is super tight. Maybe use those days in Rome and make a day trip to Ostia? Not sure what April weather is like there, that might influence your decision too.

I'm truly not trying to be snarky, but you write I’m trying to make an itinerary to make sure we have a good balance of quality vs quantity, though my mother and I both favor quality while outlining a trip that is mainly quantity

You are also planning to travel over Easter weekend. I have no experience with Easter in Italy, but it is possible that the holiday (maybe Easter Monday included) will impact sight hours, public transport availability, and you should expect large crowds, both holiday travelers and locals.

I was in the Cinque Terre in October 2008 and there were hardly any other tourists there. That has changed drastically, with overcrowding a serious problem. The last time I was in Florence was 2014. Here's the view from the Ponte Vecchio at 4.30 on a Saturday afternoon in early May.

Instead of spending many hours traveling to/from the AC, consider staying in Assisi and Orvieto instead. Orvieto can be crowded during the day but is lovely in early morning and evening, before/after the day-trippers and you can wander away from the center mid-day to avoid the hordes.

Yeah I'm very much leaning toward dropping the AC at this point.

My over ambition in this scheduling is because there are a lot of things I've seen already but I know my mother would like to see, but I still wanted to add some things I hadn't done; sort of a "my eyes are bigger than my appetite" kind of thing? So getting some reality check from more experienced travelers is really helpful. I also think everything will work itself out more once I get more destinations/sites set more concretely.

I think I'll add some time to Rome and the Tuscan region and drop the AC altogether. I'll just have to make sure to make a return trip to go there :)

Thanks for the advice!

Decide what you want to see in Tuscany. Do you plan to go all the way to Pisa? Sienna is an obvious choice, but you can see that city in one full day. Many do a day trip from Florence. I would take a day off you Tuscany plans and add it to Rome. There is so much to see in Rome.

Yeah I'll definitely consider knocking off the day in Tuscany. The more I research things to do in Rome, the more I find I want to do...

Thanks for everyone's advice! I think I have a better footing to start scheduling things! I'll see how that plays out and adjust the itinerary accordingly.

Caitlin--

You get that extra day in Rome, you can take a daytrip to Orvieto (Chani mentioned this upthread), a hilltown in Umbria. Don't know if you've visited before but it's up on a plateau & just plain cool, including one of the best viewing cathedrals, and that's saying a lot.

If you leave Termini around 10:30, you get up to Orvieto by noon. Walk, stop for a great lunch--they specialize in cinghiale (wild boar) and porchetta (stuffed pork)--then wander the streets, shop a little, and catch the train around 17:00 back to Rome. Home in time for a leisurely dinner.
