Is it better to stay in Varenzza instead of Bellagio if taking a train to Sirmione at Lake Garda? Anyone done this? And then Sirmione to Florence? Don;t know if I should try changing my itinerary. How lightly can one pack for a 2 month stay in Italy from mid-Sepember to mid-November?

That's hard to answer, but the typical weather in northern Italy could be expected to significantly change between mid-Sept and mid-Nov. You could further investigate the weather details at this site http://www.wunderground.com/tripplanner/index.asp which compactly summarizes the last 10 to 15 years of weather at locations and time periods (up to 14 days) that you specify.
