Here is what I have come up with. Please let me know what I could/should change. Friday Sept 14 arrive Rome Saturday Sept 15 take train to Naples 2 days in Naples to see Naples and Pompei Monday Sept 17 train to either Sorrento or Salerno 3 days to see Amalfi Coast, Positano Friday Sept 21 take train to Palermo, Sicily Saturday Sept 22 thru Tuesday Sept 25 see sicily. Wed Sept 26th take short flight back to Rome Thursday Sept 27 spend our day in Rome (we have been here before and done all the tours) Friday, Sept 28th depart Rome
If you have any suggestions or comments I would most certainly welcome them. Thanks
You've got about three days in Sicily and are going to spend a day and a half getting there and back. You can't 'see' the place in three days - - a week or ten days will scratch the surface. I suspect that once you complete the trip, you will have wished you'd skipped everything after Pompei and devoted the whole time to Sicily. I'd pick one node or the other unless there's some kind of personal connection to Palermo or somthing.
I'd change my itinerary to exclude Salerno for sure! Another vote for more time in Sicily - it's a big place
with so much to see and enjoy.
I'd suggest that you go from Rome directly to Sorrento and also visit Pompeii from Sorrento. Then return to Naples, where it's easier to connect to Sicily. You can see all of Naples major sights in a day, so I'd steal a day from Naples and add it to Sicily. In addition to the train, there used to be an overnight ferry from Naples to Palermo. That's an option to consider (if it's running), as it would both save a night's hotel and give you even more time in Sicily.
thanks for all your suggestions. We have decided to go from Rome directly to Naples. Do some day trips from Naples and then go by ferry to Palermo. I have been on the venere.com website and am looking for a hotel in Naples. If you have any suggestions on that I would also appreciate it. Thanks.
