ItalyL Venice and Italian Alps

I will have 10 days to travel from the US. 1. Is it enough time to see visit the Tuscany area, Venice and hike in the Italian Alps? 2. Which month in the Fall would be best? 3. Where should I arrive from US, Venice or Munich?
4. Would renting a car be more convenient than using public transportation.

If your ten days includes travel time, you will only have about eight days on the ground. I would suggest doing only two of your choices. Venice and the Dolomites make a good combination.

Sammee-I am assuming you mean the Dolomites, which are closer to Venice than the Italian alps (which are farther west). You "could" visit all 3 in ten days, say 3 days each, but that won't give you much time for hiking or enjoying either Venice or Florence. If you do want to do all 3, consider flying into Venice and back from florence so you don't backtrack. The Dolomies can be very nice in Octobe,r but many of the lifts close down until ski season, so hiking access may be more limited than if you go in September. The later you go, the greater chance of bad weather (rain, fog, and/or snow).

Hi Sammee, I'd suggest a car for the Dolomites. Fall (Sept. and Oct.) are both wonderful months to visit. In Sept. there will be more cable cars running. The Dolomites are about 3 to 4 hours drive from Venice. I'd suggest basing in either the Alta Badia or Val Gardnena. We prefer the scenery in Alta Badia though. We stayed at the Ciasa Montanara (La Villa, Alta Badia) 10/06 and 9/09. www.montanara.it We stayed at the Garni Ariston (St. Christina, Val Gardena) 10/03 www.garniariston.com Driving a few of the Dolomite Passes is always a highlight for us. The Dolomites are spectacular and like nothing else you'll see in the alps. www.altabadia.org www.altabadia.it www.val-gardena.com We have photo's at: www.worldisround.com/home/pja1/index.html Paul
