Italy with teenagers in February

We arrive in Venice on 2/12 and leave from FCO on 2/22. Myself and my 14 and 15 year old children. My wife and I just spent 5 days in Rome last February and wanted to share the experience. The plan is 2 days in Venice, train to Florence for 2 days, then 5 days in Rome (to include a day trip to Pompeii). I have the standard tours and visits in mind but looking for any suggestions for Florence-day trips or whether I should change Florence all together?

"the standard tours and visits" makes it sound like you will do all of these in 1 day in Florence and then use the other day for a possible day trip? That sounds like a very full 1 day (Uffizi, Academia, Duomo, strolling the city, including perhaps Boboli gardens and the Mercado, in 1 day?). My teens and I loved Florence. We were there for 2 ½ days with no day trips and that was enough to see everything, not feel rushed, and get beyond the tourist crush to wander quieter streets. We were out from 8a-10p. They liked the Uffizi least, the Duomo (including climb) and Academia most, and walking around the city. Duomo climb was a big hit. David is spectacular. Walking along the Arno at night is fun, the Mercado is bustling - good place for a lunch...

You might consider a cooking class in Florence, it gets a little old for children visiting art museums one after the other, also the Bardini Gardens in Florence are beautiful and even though it's Feburary the views from the garden are inspiring. The kids may like the Leonardo da Vinci Museum, there's some great lifesize models of his inventions and some virtual reality exhibits. Hope you have a great trip!
