Italy with teenager - Please help with day 6-19 of itinerary.

Our Trip is in July - we're teachers - and traveling with our 15 yr old son. Flight is booked in and out of Rome. Since we need triple rooms, I like to plan and reserve all lodging ahead of time. We prefer family owned B&B type with communal breakfast/spaces to relax in the evening over wine and conversation with fellow travelers, hosts. I thought to head south first, thinking weather may be better there early July than later. Train tickets will be bought 120 days in advance for savings. Here is what I've worked out so far as an itinerary.

Day 1 - Arrive Rome : due to late hour, taxi straight to hotel (Grifo 2 nights)

Day 2 - Vatican/Sistine/something not covered by roma pass (we have 3 more nights in Rome at end of trip)

Day 3 - 9:00 train to Naples - check baggage at station(?) and see Archeology Museum, eat pizza, and cover some of RS Naples walk, then on to Sorrento.
3 nights in Sorrento (Il Nido? or something closer in town?)

Day 4 - Pompei/Herculaneum/Vesuvius

Day 5 - Paestum

Day 6 through 19 - Here is where I need some itinerary advice

Day6 - Train to Orvieto - Pick up rental car for 7-10 days Umbria/Tuscany - would like to stay at a few well positioned agriturismos and take day trips

Florence/Sienna - would rather see these without the car, so may plan 2-4 nights for them by train before or after car rental

Pisa? Lucca?

Is there time for a lake? - with or without car?

Milan? - We would like to see the Last Supper - but have no wish to stay in and would rather avoid Expo crowds

?Where to drop the car

Day19 - Train to Venice - 4 nights Pens. Guerrato.

20 - Venice
21 - Venice
22 - Venice

Day23. Train to Rome - 3 nights Maison Giulia.
24 - Rome
25 - Rome

Day26. Fly home (AM flight)

Teresa,

So it looks like you will have 26 nights & 25 days on the ground in Italy, right?

"3 nights in Sorrento". Why not spend a couple of extra days exploring this part of Italy before heading off to Florence.

You can stay in Florence for 4-6 nights & take day trips to Siena, Luca & Pisa via train.

If you rent a car, you can travel & stay in some of the hill towns in Tuscany.

This is a good website to read about the villages of Tuscany: http://www.borghiditoscana.net/en/#

If you want to visit a lake, I'd suggest going to Lake Garda (on your way to Venice)-- you may stay in Verona & take day trip to Lake Garda & cruise the lake via ferry boat.

You have so many possibilities with the time you have for your trip.

If you want to see the 'Last Supper', then you will want to stay in Milan for a couple of days.

You can go to Lake Como or Lake Maggiore from Milan before heading to Venice.

I'm sure you will get many opinions/suggestions from others on this forum.

Happy Planning!

Edit: In my opinion, Rome deserves at least 4 full days, Florence 3-4 full days.

The Paestum visit from Sorrento is quite long....or at least a few connections.....after Sorrento, why not spend 2 nights or so in Salerno, and taking a day trip to Paestum and then one of the Amalfi Coast towns, Amalfi/Ravello/Positano/Vietri/Cetara......I see you have 14 days up in the air, so 3 nights in Salerno and then a train to Florence for 3-4 nights, and then you have 8 to explore the places between Florence and Venice, 4 in an agriturismo in Tuscany, and 4 maybe at a lake?

Rome Colesseum, self guided tour with head set would be great for your son.
Definitely follow ricks advice on advance tickets for Vatican, saved us so much time and be sure to read his advice on how to leave Sistine Chapel (then go straight to cupola).
Ancient Rome is wonderful but also very hot at that time of year.
We did Vatican and St. Peter's in one day
Next day we did Colesseum and Ancient Rome
In Venice, see if your trip lines up with a festival like the redeemer, July 18 & 19.

Love Il Nido! For a B&B closer to town look at http://www.venere.com.

For the Tuscan countryside you might consider these: http://www.borgorapale.it/.

It's about 75 miles from Orvieto, and connecting the towns with Montepulciano makes a

great day trip. Arezzo is 28 miles and Cortona is 38 miles.

http://www.collelungo.com/EN/index.html. This one puts you 45 miles from Florence.,

16 miles to San Gimignano, 29 to Volterra, Pisa is 68 miles and Lucca 73 miles.

These lodgings are not far apart, but basing in the two would give you a great overview

of Tuscany.

The coast is nearby, 65 miles, maybe Roberto would interject and give you some beach towns there.

Hope this helps. Have a great trip.

Love Paestum, spending the night there would be a great idea. It would be a long daytrip from Sorrento. Besides the beautiful temples, there is a very good small museum and a beach. I like staying at Hotel Poseidonia Mare, not far from the beach; they will loan you bikes if you like (about 1 kilometer to the ruins). You can also visit a mozzarella farm while you're there.

Pisa and Lucca can be combined for one daytrip. You can walk or bike the walls of Lucca. I would suggest 4 nights in Florence, using it as a base for daytrips to Pisa/Lucca and Siena, as well as other places you may want to visit if you are not interested in the artwork available in Florence. Evenings there will give you lots of opportunities to stroll around and be entertained.
