Italy with mobility issues

What would be a nice itinerary for someone with mobility issues? My husband had a difficult time walking long ways and climbing stairs. We have always wanted to visit the Tuscany region as well as the coast. Any advice about group tours would be appreciated.

Hi and welcome to the forum, vjwingate57 -
Could you give us a bit more information about your husband's mobility difficulties? My concern is that having to keep up with group tours may be too much for him. Many do involve lots of walking. As well, visiting parts of the Italian coast (which coast?) can involve being able to manage steep inclines and stairs. You'll also want to be cautious of being booked in hotels that have elevators as not all of them do.

This is a good place to start looking at places in Italy that are friendly to the mobility challenged + ways of managing some which are not. Even though it looks like the concentration is on persons using wheelchairs, much of the info can apply to others with mobility limitations. Sage Traveling is also endorsed by Rick Steves.

Take a browse through the material and maybe contact the company if interested in some of their tours?

Hi Vjwingate57,

We are going to Rome and the Amalfi Coast with my 87 year old father in law who has similar mobility issues. We are bringing a cane with a seat that he found on Amazon to help with stability on the uneven ground. We also booked more private or small group tours, and let the tour guides know in advance about his issues, with drivers to accommodate these challenges. I found most of the tour guides from recommendations on this site. Some are golf cart/Tuk Tuk tours where we can ride (Rome) between sites and get off only where he wants to.

For the Amalfi Coast, we decided to stay in Sorrento because it was recommended as the easiest place to walk and has an elevator down to the beach area. We are taking day trips from there, primarily by ferry and car to avoid some of the hills.

I also have the contact info for a few mobility scooter places if we end up needing them.

Good luck and enjoy the trip!

Note that every restroom in a cafe or restaurant (which is where most available toilets are) will be up or down a steep set of stairs. I traveled with my mother in Italy when she was 80 and I don't recall a restaurant we went to where that was not so.

Thank you all for the helpful replies. Here is the additional information requested. My husband had lung cancer and only has 1 lung now. He has been cancer free for 4 years but due to the cancer treatments, contacting mersa in the hospital - and having to take a very powerful antibiotic to combat - it he has neuropathy in its hands and feet. He also becomes out of breath when walking up many stairs.
Yes, when I said the Tuscany Region it meant wine country. As far as the coast goes, we have always wanted to visit the Amalfy Coast but fear it would be too difficult. I just said "coast" hoping for suggestions that would be beautiful and fun, but not as challenging. We are considering independent travel since it may be hard to keep up with a tour. Picking 2 cities, maybe Florence and Rome, and staying in hotels close to the rain stations. That way we could take day trips by train. The problem with this is not knowing if transportation is needed once the destination is reached and if any is available.

Sorrento has lovely hotels with balconies or big windows overlooking the sea. Amalfi is very steep -- I'd not want to visit with issues with climbing.
