Italy with a baby - Selective Itinerary

We will be visiting Italy for 3 weeks with our infant, so trying to limit the amount of travel. We will be based in Genoa as we are staying with friends. This will give us plenty of time to visit Cinque Terre, Portofino and the various coastal towns in Liguria.

We have also booked 4 nights in Bologna. Thinking we can do a day trip to Parma and Modena.

What else would be a must see? We have both already been to Florence, Rome, Pisa, Lucca, Siena, Amalfi. Should we visit Turin, Verona, other? I figure we will see Milan as we are flying in and out of there. Venice doesn’t interest me that much. I think Florence would be nice to see again given proximity to Bologna.

We want to limit the travel with the baby but don’t want to miss something obvious if it fits geographically. All will be by train.

Thanks for your input!!

Have you traveled with infant before? If this is your first, some are very flexible and roll with change....others, not so much. Also, when is travel? If off season, maybe stay longer in Bologna, or a few days in Padua, and do more daytrips.....on baby's good days.

Trip is in April. Have not travelled with infant before but she is not a fussy baby. We are lucky. But you’re right, we’re not sure how she will be with overseas travel.

I suggest that you look carefully at the Ligurian towns you have mentioned and think about what you are going to do in them. In my opinion, Portofino is dull, important only to the super-rich yachting community.
The Cinque Terre are known for hiking trails. Is that what you are planning to do there? Baby on back? Time of visit is also important. The 5 towns and trails are unbelievably crowded in high season, June - August.
We stayed in S. Margherita Ligure, from which you can take a ferry to several other towns. Camogli is also attractive. We very much liked Dolceaqua, but I don’t know if it is served by rail.

Genoa-Bologna-Florence-Turin sounds pretty great. I would not move any more than four times.

Turin is not far from Genova.

If you have never been to Venice, I'm sure it'd be interesting to see. It's just over 90 min from Bologna, if you care to try.
