Italy with a baby itinerary

Hello!

Would love suggestions for itinerary/locations for a 7-10 day trip to Italy with a 6 month old. My wife and I would like to take a trip before she has to return to work, and are looking for something relatively quiet and relaxing, but with enough activities and sights around for a few day trips. We went to the Dordogne in France last summer and it was ideal - amazing food, interesting history, pretty and peaceful. Can anyone recommend something similar in Italy? We'd likely want to spend a few days in a larger city, but the bulk of the time somewhere less busy. We're considering Cinque Terre but worry a bit about the crowds. We're looking at a September time frame.

Thanks!

How about Tuscany or Umbria? Or one of the lakes near Padova, Verona, Venezia?

Your baby will be your backstage pass - young children are rock stars in Italy.

Sorry, I just saw September!

Zoe has great ideas. One other I would offer is the Italian Dolomites, if it is earlier rather than later in the month. Stunning scenery, hiking if you do that sort of thing. We see lots of babies in strollers and backpacks on the trails (we are in the mountains now). It is very family oriented. If this interests you, I can give more specifics.

thanks to both of you! Yes, we were thinking early in the month. I'd love more info on the Dolomites!

The Dolomites are not only beautiful, there is access to incredible mountain scenery and activity for even the least fit people, all without a car. You can hike for 30 minutes or all day. You take cablecars to high mountain meadows, walk to a rifugio where you can have refreshments from a perfect espresso to a full hot meal and find a clean restroom. You will walk through pastureland with horses and cows grazing, and at high altitudes may spot a marmot. We have been hiking now for three weeks and have yet to run out of possibilities.

The little Tyrolean towns are charming. We particularly like Ortisei in the Val Gardena. Lots of shops, community activities, highly strollable, and peaceful.

You can get here without a car. Train to Bolzano then bus or private transfer to Ortisei. (Euro 85 for the transfer but with baby and equipment it might be worthwhile.) Once here, the buses are free with a pass issued by your lodging. You can reach many destinations on the bus network, or you can buy a lift pass to access the high areas. There is a lot of info at the Val Gardena website.

Also, the Alpe di Siusi is a possible place to stay so you get the high mountain meadow experience overnight. We did a combo a couple of years ago with two nights in the Alpe di Siusi and four in the valley in Ortisei. Gave us a nice range of experiences. You might look at the Hotel Saltria in the Alpe di Siusi.

In Ortisei there are tons of lodging possibilities from simple B&Bs to grand hotels catering to families. I will PM you as well.

Cinque Terre was crowded but there were many with children and babies. Beach was wonderful in Monterosso and if you don't mind paying for umbrella and chairs, it would be fun and relaxing.

We did an easy bike tour through I Bike Tuscany that was downhill and they picked us up in Florence and took us to the Tuscan Countryside. I'm almost certain they could outfit one of the bikes with a baby carriage on back if that's something you'd want to do.

Good for you! We contemplated doing the same last year but it never happened. We plan on taking our son (who will be two when we go) next summer. I do love Cinque Terre but have heard that it has gotten more crowded in the last few years. What about Siena, Venice, or Verona? I know Venice gets crowded too but you can easily take daytrips from there. Please report back on where you go, I'm interested in hearing from others who have traveled with babies and toddlers. Cheers!

Thanks everyone! Any suggestions on specific places to stay? Looking mainly at mid-range prices, though open to higher end places if it's something special.

In which of the locations are you interested?

EDIT: And what is mid-range to you?

We're flying in to Milan, and are considering a Milan, Lake Como/Dolomites, Venice loop based on geography, though Tuscany or something by the sea (a la Cinque Terra) is still calling to us. Thinking $250 and under/night and willing to stretch to $500/night for something really special (and for only a couple nights!).

We rarely spend more than Euro 120 per night. You can live like royalty on your budget.

For example, at the Resort Hotel Albion in Ortisei, for Euro 278 per day (includes the 3 of you) you can have a suite, breakfast, and dinner, plus access to all of their amenities (great pool area!). We did this as a splurge on Christmas and loved it. And it is in our favorite corner of Italy.
