Hello Everyone,
I've been to Europe 4 times, but never with a kid. My wife and I will be travelling to Italy next summer (Julyish)with our 1 year old (she'll be 1 then, she's not born yet). We're planning around 2-3 weeks. Priorities will be Rome, Tuscany/Umbria. Usually we start our trip in Big cities (Roma) to take advantage of our pent up excitement, but we're wondering if we should start someplace a bit more mellow until the little one gets settled into the new sleep zone. We also intend to stay at an agriturismo for a week or so during our stay. Any thoughts on travelling with a 1 year old? Thanks.
Darren, all children are different. Your child could be a dream and travel great, many kids/babies do,, but some do not. I personally would wait till child arrives and I got to know its little personality before I would be able to plan a trip around him/her. Some kids just settle easily,, others,, yikes.
I do think a stay in a agriturismo sounds like a great idea, you could rent a car and take little forays out into country each day ,, or just spent a lazy afternoon by the pool( which some but not all have).
I am not just giving a flip answer , I have three children,, and one( my dd) I would have taken around the world at one,, but on of my sons, was at the very best difficult to even go to MIL house a few hours away.. so when I say kids vary,, kids vary.. and yes, we were definately the " kids won't alter our lifestyle too much, we will just take them with us " type parents.
Keep in mind a few things, Italy in July is HOT and small children do not do as well in heat, ,heatstroke a real possibility if not careful. One is a funny age,, they are either just walking or some may even still be crawling around,, so hotel floors are their playground,,you will have to check carefully each place you stay.. I kind of think if you could go when child is younger,, say 7-9 months its better, they will still sit in strollers for hours, whereas one year olds want to try out their legs more. You could avoid heat issue too if you went in April _May.
Why not take trip this year baby is super portable when mom is carrying them.. LOL ??
My daughter and son-in-law actually canceled a trip to Europe last year, which they had planned when their son was 6 months old. As he got to be 1 year, they realized that the increased activity level plus complete irrationality of a toddler was not going to make for a pleasant experience - - and he is pretty easy as toddlers go. I know a lot of people do travel with small children. If you are totally determined, I suggest that you wait as long as possible before buying tickets and paying any non-refundable deposits. My kids forfeited around $1000 just on rentals; they were flying on points. You may be able to get some sense of your child's temperament when she becomes mobile and make your decision accordingly.
April/May isn't out (that's actually my preferred time to travel to Europe), but I was planning july since mmr shots can't be taken before 1yo. I've heard nightmares about picking up measles in switzerland than bringing them back. I'm not overly paranoid, its just what I've been thinking. Also, I've never been to italy in peak season, so that's another plus. Obviously everyone will be different, and we'll find out when we find out. Thanks for the insight.
