Italy, where to visit

A friend and I are going to Italy in September. Our base will be Vicenza. We will travel to Florence for 2 nights then to Santa Margherita and Cinque de Terre for 2 nights. We do not want to go South. Would like to go somewhere for 3 or 4 days then back to Vicenza and surrounding area. Can go east or North to Switzerland. Don't know what to do.

Carolyn,

There are LOTS of possibilities from Vicenza:

Venice

Verona

Sirmione (Lago di Garda)

Padua

Bolzano and Castelrotto (Dolomites)

Stresa (if you can afford one night there, take the incredible scenic Cento Valli Railway to Locarno. Switzerland and return by boat - you could also tour Isola Bella, one of the Borromeo islands)

Lago di Como (Varenna, Bellagio, etc.)

If you can afford a few days in Switzerland, you might consider the Berner Oberland and Gimmelwald.

Be sure to allow for adequate travel time from Vicenza to the Cinque Terre.

You might want to have a look at the Italy Guidebook to see which cities and sights interest you the most.

Happy travels!

guide books such as the one RS publishes are loaded with ideas about where to go and what to see.

If you like food, I would recommend going to Bologna and go on the Italian Days Food Tour, www.italiandays.it. It was the most fun and informative tour we had.

If you've never been to Venice, you should go there. No other place like it on the planet.

Ravenna, San Marino, Padova, Venice, Bologna, Verona. All within easy distance of Vicenza.

Carolyn,

To add to my earlier post, are there any places that you're really interested in seeing, perhaps places that you've seen on Rick's TV programs or other travel shows?

If you could provide some further information, I'm sure it would help the group here to narrow down the suggestions.

Cheers!

I would say you could see most of Vicenza in that one afternoon. With the limited time in CT I would say Visit Riomaggiore and Vernazza and do the via Dell Amore between Manarola and Riomaggiore. If you get time see Monterosso but skip Corniglia. There's not a whole lot there.I would suggest actually adding time in CT if you can.
