Italy...when and were to go?

We just had a wonderful vacation in the Cotswolds in England. Lots of hiking, long drives, gorgeous sunset walks, visits to amazing castles, manor homes and gardens and even a palace, and fantastic food at adorable local pubs and restaurants. Rented our own cottage and loved it!!(if interested, http://www.broadway-cotswolds.co.uk/brookcottage.html was fabulous and inexpensive) . If we wanted a similar type of vatation in Italy, where would you recommend going? Every time we see Tuscany in a movie we want to go, but am not familiar with what city names fall into that area...and how to fly in...to Rome? Also, your recommendation about best time to go..we love the heat and the cold....as long as it's not too rainy.....do not necessarily want to be there at peak season. Any info would be great!! Thanks

Many people like the agriturismos in Italy for just this sort of vacation. The Rick Steves' Guide to Florence and Tuscany would be a good start for recommendations, as well as Venere.com, Homeaway.com, VRBO.com. If you like the idea of Tuscany, "shoulder season" should be great, but I'd lean toward spring (April & May) or no later than September based on limited personal experience. mid-October was getting a might foggy and cool when we were there last year. You can fly into Florence, Pisa, Rome, Milan and get to almost anywhere in Tuscany easily enough. (Florence and Pisa are actually in Tuscany, BTW.)
