Italy-weather in September

Interested in going to Italy in September...do not like the heat! Please advise! Is it still hot!

We are going in the middle of September. Typically, it is considered a pleasant month i believe...low to mid 80's. However, last year and the year before I've read (and heard) it was quite hot. So, there is really no way to predict what September is going to be like this early out. My bet is that it's going to be warmer than normal due to the heat wave right now...but who knows? I'm from them midwest and we can have a scorching July and very pleasant September.

If you want to play it safe, delay your trip one month.

Just no way to know. We were in Rome the first week of June one year and I thought we might freeze to death. It was so cold that the sidewalk cafes did not open. The exact same week one year later was high 90s with high humidity. It was miserable. So it can be either. But I would guess on the hot side. Late October generally is much nicer except that the days get short.

susan,

I normally travel in September as the weather is usually quite reasonable, although it can still be warm. If you wait until October, there could be more chance of rain (although I've experienced torrential storms in September also).

I was in Italy last year from the 20th of September. It was 35C (95F) in Rome during the day and mid 20s at night. Tuscany was probably mid to late 20s. With the exception of those really hot couple of days in Rome it was sunny and comfortable shorts / tshirt weather for the whole 10 days. Im hoping for the same weather again this year :)

Define heat! Depending on where you are, it could be humid as well as warmer than you'd like.

My first trip to Italy, 7 years ago, was in the first half of October . . . Milan, Venice, Florence, Cinque Terre. Venice was warm. Without a fan in my room, I would have been uncomfortable. In Florence I had AC and used it gratefully.

Even in October, if you don't like heat, be sure to get rooms with AC.

If you follow the link on the wunderground.com trip planning site, with a little effort you can get to the actual day-by-day historical weather data for the last 10-15 years. You can see the highs and lows for the major cities you are planning to visit. This will give you a better idea of what you could encounter.

Yes, I agree with Chani! What's hot for me from N Idaho is probably different than what someone from FL feels is hot. For the record I was in Italy the first week of Sept last year and thought it was pretty hot.

Someone from Alabama who thinks 80 is hot needs to move forward a month or two. There will be more days over 80 in September than under in Italy. I thought 80 in Alabama was the average for winter.

I have spent approximately 28-30 Septembers in Italy, more than anybody on this board.

Temperatures early in the month tend to be hotter than later in the month.

Temperatures vary depending on location. Near the coast is milder than in the interior. At high altitude it is cooler than at low altitude. All other things being equal, the south is warmer than the north. Therefore things may be different depending on where exactly you go in Italy. The top of the Dolomites are likely cooler than Florence.

Temperatures are also cooler at night than during the day. Cool rainy days are also cooler and wetter than clear hot days, unfortunately it's hard to predict what you will encounter where and when you go and where you go.

Well, for those who don't know about Alabama weather....today it will be 97 degrees! One of the nice things about Alabama weather is that we have 4 seasons every year! Cold in winter, beautiful spring, very hot summer and beautiful fall! Come on down!

I want to enjoy my time in Italy, that should include for me pleasant temps:)

You are bragging about 97 degrees? What is the humidity? And I will bet your definition of cold and mine don't match. Maybe around Atlanta which is a little higher gets a little cooler but cold ????

My idea of hot is anything over about 85 degrees.....I am certainly not bragging about being 97 degrees...it is dangerous and no fun to be outside. Atlanta maybe a little higher but about the same weather for Birmingham and Atlanta.

It is the dew point that makes warm weather intolerable. Anything over 65 is muggy. I see in Florence today it is 57, that is tolerable to me even if the temp is 90F. But I see the 10 day forecast for Florence is mostly 100 to 102F ... now that IS hot.

Italy is hot and sunny in September, but it rains too, and evenings and nights are cool. And there's high winds and Hail storms!

Last September I got terribly ill in Rome because the buses had No AC. Walking and taking taxi cabs solved that. I don't take the Rome buses anymore. I don't take buses in Firenze anymore either cause the locals make me close the windows, and I just can't ride around with No fresh air moving about.

Last September In Firenze I got caught in a freak Hail storm at Noon. September 19 my birthday. I was sitting outside at Za'Za' and cold high winds made the heavy drop curtains useless. Glassware and plates crashed to the floor, silverware flew across the patio. Hail was ankle deep in the streets. When it stopped, the air was warm and sunny and we all resumed walking like nothing had happened. That evening was warm and pleasant when I met up with first cousins from Indiana. We just dodged pools of Hail on our way to IL Brincello.

Pack a few T-shirts/Tanktops and shorts for hot days. Sunglasses and hats. A few long pants, skirts for cool rainy days and evenings. I always pack the RS umbrella and RS rain cape. A versatile wrap you wear on flight cause those cabins are cold.

Pack this in one carry-on bag meeting airline dimension and weight rules and you are Good to Go.

We traveled in September in Italy a few years ago. We were going to spend October and November in Paris and so had packed for fall in Paris and felt lucky that we had put in a few very lightweight things as it was quite hot in Italy. I had a cotton wrap skirt and a pair of linen pants and some t-shirts and that is what I wore for that month day in and day out.
